Burns & McDonnell Department Manager - Transmission & Distribution in Akron, Ohio

Description

The T&D Department Manager, located in Akron, Ohio, is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the T&D business in Akron, as well as coordinating/developing opportunities with other Global Practices throughout the Ohio Region This person will be working directly with the T&D Operations Manager in St. Louis, Columbus Office Management and the Account leadership team for FirstEnergy. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by the T&D Operations Manager and other senior management:

Organizational

  • Advocating for safety within the Departments.

  • Coordinating work for the Departments, including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Supporting overall Regional office development and resource coordination between GPs.

  • Fostering collaboration amongst T&D EO’s in all the SLO offices. This includes Akron, Columbus, and St. Louis offices.

  • Interpreting policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to staff.

  • Assisting in the development and execution of the St. Louis T&D Business Plan.

  • Preparing and monitoring the department budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.

  • Supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives.

  • Facilitating profitable and sound growth of T&D by coordinating with the Operations Manager to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

  • Recommending changes in basic structure and organization of the department to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.

  • Support local initiatives as required in Akron and in the Ohio Region.

Business Development

  • Assist St. Louis T&D Management in providing overall oversight and direction for the business development of the Ohio Market. Work with the appropriate personnel on the development and administration of the St. Louis Business Plan.

  • Work closely with St. Louis T&D Management to oversee the development of work with new clients as well as the expansion of Akron work with existing clients.

  • Provide for the development and leveraging of a strong ‘Burns and McDonnell India’ (or other value engineering) team dedicated to the support of St. Louis projects.

  • Identify department opportunities, provide oversight and enthusiasm for a coordinated and disciplined pursuit process including thoughtful “go/no-go” decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, development of pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.

Personnel

  • Training, developing, mentoring, and career-development of the staff.

  • Recruiting top talent as well as the engagement and retainage of staff.

  • Where needed, serve as project manager for key clients, new clients, or where new lines of business are being developed.

  • Management and career development of department personnel. Responsible for the development of leadership within the departments and for assisting with the overall leadership development within the office.

  • Organizing, leading, and conducting the annual performance appraisal process for department staff.

  • Facilitate a thriving work environment that facilitates the recruitment, development, and retainment of the market’s top-talent.

Technical/Execution/Production

  • Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on engineering projects.

  • Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers.

  • Advancing and developing department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum seven (7) years of related professional experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited program and registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.

  • Technical ability in Substation, T-Line or NIA Engineering Design is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
