Description

Summary: Analyzes blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other construction contract documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for projects or services by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews blueprints, specifications, proposals and other construction contract documentation to determine material, labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.

  • Computes cost factors, equipment, and labor units to prepare estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effectiveness.

  • Conducts special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related to cost data or effect cost reductions.

  • Ability to lead and mentor Level 1 and 2 estimators.

  • Provide feedback and encouragement to improve skill set and confidence of estimators.

  • Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.

  • Interfaces with other individuals in the organization to obtain support and commitment to the cost estimates.

  • Organizes and manages a centralized cost estimating database and a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.

  • Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs to actual cost and determine the reason for any discrepancies.

  • Provides improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.

  • Identifies cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.

  • Lead and mentor several estimators. Answer day to day questions for estimators.

  • Manage large estimates and delegate tasks to the group.

  • Provide feedback and encouragement to improve skill set and confidence of estimators.

  • Assist with assigning bids to estimators based on resource availability and appropriate skill level required for bid.

  • Work closely with Estimating Manager to plan for incoming bids.

  • Develop post bid review presentation with Marketing.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four year college or university, with an emphasis in Engineering or

Construction Management; and a minimum of six years related experience and/or training;

or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Office Suite

Experience with electrical estimating software: Accubid preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Six to ten years previous estimating experience, cost control, and/or project experience in similar construction.

  • Thorough knowledge of company procedures, estimating techniques, all engineering disciplines, cost control systems required.

  • Must have the ability to prepare complex proposals with minimum supervision.

  • Detail oriented, blueprint reading, drafting, customer service skills, and a good understanding of accounting principles and profit and loss statement.

  • Familiarity and understanding of the National Electric Code.

Other Qualifications:

Infrequent travel will be required.
