Burns & McDonnell Public Involvement Specialist in Atlanta, Georgia
Burns & McDonnell ( http://www.burnsmcd.com/ ) is seeking a mid-to-senior level communications professional with client/account management experience and political savvy to manage/oversee the communication and outreach efforts in support of an electrical utility construction project. The position will be based in and report to our Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Some travel will be required.
This position will serve as the Public Involvement Manager for a series of major utility infrastructure improvement projects. The Public Involvement Manager will be responsible for managing outreach strategy development and implementation throughout the life of the Project. The candidate must have proven relationship building and account management experience, the ability to think strategically, keep informed about project activities through study and participation in project meetings, manage and work well in a team environment, have excellent project management and organizational skills, a proven ability to communicate professionally and interact effectively at all audience levels, have a flexible schedule, and be willing to work evenings and/or weekends, as needed.
Knowledge and experience working with Georgia communities and having electric utility experience a plus. Training, skills and qualifications in Engagement, Communications, Public Relations or related fields and experience working with senior-level corporate executives, community & business leaders required.
Develop and implement a stake holder outreach and management plan to support project developments through siting, permitting, construction and close out.
Work in conjunction with project managers to establish functional goals, strategies and objectives and to ensure that the Public Involvement team executes the community outreach plans and processes accordingly.
Establish and maintain relationships with project stakeholders: public officials, property owners and businesses affected by large-scale projects.
Proactively seek opportunities to build project awareness to keep these parties informed of project activities.
Manage sub-consultants to keep them on track in supporting project objectives (schedule, community relations issues, etc.).
Develop and manage communication and outreach plans that support project objectives and milestones.
Manage the development and distribution of effective public information materials, such as brochures, handouts, newsletters, mailers, web site content, and other materials to project audiences.
Plan, coordinate, perform, and manage the implementation of public involvement activities and outreach for the project, such as public meetings, information sessions, municipal leader briefings, and other special events.
Manage, track, and respond to verbal and written project inquiries in a timely manner.
Manage the documentation of questions, concerns, and requests from public officials, property owners and businesses using the Company’s internal web-based database.
Monitor and report to internal and client project management on critical communications issues and activities.
Provide guidance, training, and assistance to project management and other project team members in communicating project information to the public.
Assume special assignments, projects and other duties, as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field from an accredited program.
Minimum of 8 years strategic communication experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Completion of a master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
Experience related to communication on behalf of engineering or construction projects a plus.
Media-relations skills and previous experience working with media outlets to develop and deliver key messages and manage content (news, events, crises, etc.)
Proposal writing experience strongly preferred.
Experience in developing content for social media and news releases, as well as web design and coding (for both traditional and social media platforms) is a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to understand and assist with the management of large-scale permitting and construction projects, and the necessary communications processes associated with such an effort.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Expert analytical and problem solving skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
High level of attention to detail with ability to perform quality reviews.
