Burns & McDonnell Scoping Team Physical Lead - Substation (Atlanta) in Atlanta, Georgia

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Scoping Team Substation Physical Lead engineer in our Atlanta office. The scoping substation physical lead engineer will report directly to the scoping manager on a large capital investment program with a major Southeast utility. Other key responsibilities will include:


  • Responsible for scoping out the Substation Physical Design portion of all Substation projects. Deliverables include at a minimum Scoping Document and Location Plan view.

  • Collaborate with other discipline leads to successfully scope all substation work related to Transmission and Distribution projects.

  • Collaborate with OE Manager, OE discipline leads and peers of functional areas within program team to ensure alignment on program direction and processes.

  • Interface and work with the client’s project management leadership team to provide regular, timely updates and suggest scope options for the client’s approval.

  • Lead Substation Physical Design scoping activities of the team of BMcD employees and/or contractors.

  • Create options focusing on constructable work plans with cost estimates.

  • Support estimating and material forecasting efforts.


  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering a plus.

  • 7 years electrical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred.

  • Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design ANSI and IEEE Standards. Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.
