Burns & McDonnell is looking for an experienced Civil or Environmental Engineer for environmental, solid waste and resource recovery related projects to add to our Environmental Services Engineering team. This position can be based in our Houston or Austin, TX regional office.

As part of the Environmental Services Practice, this position will support the development and growth of our environmental engineering and solid waste and resource recovery business practice. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and have the following experience:

  • Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Facility planning, permitting, design, and site development of solid waste facilities as project engineer and/or project manager.

  • Performs and leads work which involves conventional engineering practices but may involve a variety of complex features. Requires general knowledge of precedents in specialty areas and familiarity with basic principles and practices in related specialties.

  • Leads and contributes to project studies and report preparation assignments. This position requires a competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • May coordinate or lead departmental and divisional project studies and report preparation assignments. This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Lead environmental design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

  • Applies expert knowledge of commonly used environmental concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the environmental engineering services industry.

  • Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard design solutions.

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Participate sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.

  • Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates. Report project performance.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the environmental engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Planning and analysis for solid waste programs including, but not limited to, financial studies, procurement assistance, waste characterization, education and outreach, zero waste studies, and long-range strategic plans.

  • Interest in the solid waste industry and ability to monitor and communicate new market drivers and regulatory changes.

  • Executing civil engineering methods and practices in the preparation of bid-ready engineering designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports

  • Using design programs such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, MicroStation, etc.

  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or master’s degree(s) in civil, environmental, or related engineering program from an accredited university

  • PE preferred

  • 3 years of related professional experience required

  • 40-hr HAZWOPER certification preferred

  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and technical writing

  • Available for project related and marketing travel, as needed
