Burns & McDonnell Electrical Engineer - Substation in Baltimore, Maryland

Description

Burns & McDonnell has an opportunity in our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) group for a Staff Electrical Engineer, located in Baltimore.

Responsibilities include the preparation of electrical substation design; ownership of project scope and schedule; interface and coordination with other disciplines including protection and controls, communications, civil & structural, architectural, transmission line, project/program management, public relations, permitting, and contractor coordination & construction support as needed to successfully execute and develop deliverables for high and extra high voltage substations (HV and EHV).

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design substations utilizing client standards or developing new standards including:

  • Bill of materials

  • Single lines, Three lines

  • Material/Construction specifications

  • Physical layouts, equipment plans, sections and details

  • Grounding and ground grids

  • Control building arrangements

  • AC and DC protection and control schematics

  • Relay and control panel arrangements

  • Equipment and relay panel wiring

  • Interior and exterior raceways

  • Auxiliary AC and DC power systems

  • Cable/Conduit lists

  • Prepare calculations and equipment specifications.

  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual designs.

  • Provide engineering and construction support for projects.

  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client and others as needed.

  • Execute assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Identify, communicate and resolve issues on projects as needed.

  • May develop and evaluate plans for major projects.

  • May assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient or testing is advisable.

  • Perform design quality reviews for projects.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 3 years related design experience, ideally with some exposure to substation facilities.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Dedication to task completion and a strong work ethic are essential.

  • This position requires high attention to detail with the ability to self-identify quality issues.

  • Ability to communicate issues and identify solutions.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Occasionally meets and corresponds with clients or outside personnel and develop relationships with key client points of contact.

  • Effectively execute project work and deliver high quality work products.

  • Perform design quality reviews for projects of small to medium sizes.

  • Professional Engineer registration in a US state or Canadian Province preferred.
