We have a specific opportunity for an experienced Civil/ Geotechnical Section Manager to join our team, working on a variety of transmission & distribution projects at all voltage ranges across the UK. This role will initially work on further developing the Burns & McDonnell project execution systems and process, building on the strong capability from the US. The role will involve supporting the front-end work winning activity as well as overseeing the project delivery through the construction phase to completion. The role will also assist in developing our supply chain.

To provide leadership and management of Burns & McDonnell’s UK Civil & Geotechnics Section within the (power) Transmission & Distribution Global Practice. This includes:
Undertaking senior technical roles on project specific multi-disciplinary engineering teams;
Being a senior technical authority on civil and geotechnical engineering, as it relates to power T&D infrastructure (electricity substations, overhead lines, and high voltage underground cables), within the wider company;
Growing and enhancing the Civil & Geotechnics Section engineering capability in the UK business
Providing personnel management of line reports within the Civil & Geotechnics Section.
Lead successful output of civil and geotechnical engineering deliverables in the UK T&D business, working closely with the Engineering Director to assemble suitable civil and geotechnical engineering personnel from across our global offices, as required.
Be a lead technical role on civil and geotechnical engineering work packages relating to electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, including undertaking the role of Lead Project Engineer on project teams, as required.
Produce detailed civil/geotechnical engineering design packages, compliant to required client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA), including civil design, analysis of foundations and geotechnical data, substation below ground structural components, and other below ground civil engineering components, using industry standard software.
Lead various civil project designs including site design, land development, roads, storm drainage systems, storm water management facilities, water and sanitary sewer utility design, sediment and erosion control, and facility design.
Lead drawing production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.
Incorporate and approve schedules, budgets and project criteria into civil design and layouts for project financial goals.
Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of design undertaken.
Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on geotechnical reports and civil engineering designs.
Work closely with other sections with the UK T&D Engineering Team, particularly the Structures Section and Substation Section, to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function in the UK business.
Maintain technical compliance to applicable Burns & McDonnell and client design management standards, processes, and procedures on all work delivered by Civil & Geotechnics Section staff.
Develop and implement policies, processes, procedures, standards, and technical guidance, as required to continually improve the engineering capability within the Civil & Geotechnics Section.
Report regularly staff utilisation forecasts, capability development progress, and any issues requiring office support.
Plan and lead project and client meetings, as required.
Act as Principal Designer representative, as defined by UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, where required.
Where appropriate and required, Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid’s TP137 procedure, or equivalent role as defined by other clients.
Support the preparation of project proposals and lead tender presentations.
Drive ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects, at all times.
Support nurturing of a safety and technical excellence culture through emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude.
Understanding wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning, in order to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.
Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell’s UK Integrated Management System.
Support nurturing of world-class customer service culture, to drive client success.
Be an ambassador for Burns & McDonnell at all times through acting in accordance with expected high ethical and moral standards, and in adherence to Burns & McDonnell Code of Conduct.
Provide strong but supportive general personnel management of line reports, with emphasis on supporting continued development, providing technical guidance, and establishing training needs.
Actively support marketing and business development activities, building relationships with clients and generating new business
Seeking and development of future business opportunities through nurturing of client relationships, active pursuit of new project leads, and elevation of the Burns & McDonnell brand.
Identifying new skills and competencies required within the Burns & McDonnell team to meet business needs and actively supporting development and recruitment of talent, including candidate interviewing.
Act as technical leader in T&D infrastructure geotechnical analysis and civil engineering design and contribute to relevant professional bodies and industry groups. Maintain Continued Professional Development (CPD).
Support or lead portions of department meetings; organise and lead section meetings.
Interpret and establish policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the organisation.
Assist in determining departmental objectives and requirements, organise projects and develop standards and guidelines.
Support and assist in the development of the UK business plan.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be asked of this position by Senior Management.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, from an accredited institution.
Professional registration as a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council.
Membership of a relevant professional Engineering Institution (e.g. ICE).
Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Cert./Dip., NVQ Level 3 in H&S related subject).
Minimum of 10 years of civil engineering design experience, with at least 7 years of experience in the electricity transmission & distribution sector.
Knowledge of engineering design management best practices with ability to implement this knowledge.
Advanced knowledge in civil engineering related design, calculations and design systems.
Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry.
Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Environmental and Waste Management legislation.
Thorough understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations, and experience of discharging all required duties of the CDM Principal Designer representative.
Experience of working in a lead civil/structural engineering design role on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects in the UK and acting as a TP137 CDAE for Substation Civil/Structural.
Good knowledge of National Grid’s Transmission Procedures, in particular: TP135, TP137, TP141, TP153, TP163, TP184, TP188, TP235, TP241.
Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to civil/structural engineering of electricity T&D infrastructure in the UK.
Understanding of the causes and consequences of Impressed Voltage.
Understanding of the general requirements of procedural control of Temporary Works, in accordance with British Standards.
IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
Good knowledge of applying CAD technology/software (Revit, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, Tekla Tedds etc.) to civil engineering design and strong understanding of BIM principles (PAS 1192 and ISO 16950).
Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

Experience fulfilling the role of Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) and per National Grid’s TP137.
Substation safety and access training (e.g. NSI 30, BESC:AIM etc.)
Formal training in CDM 2015, Temporary Works, and Impressed Voltages.
Ability to travel nationally is required for the role. Level of travel may vary significantly over time depending on project and client requirements, but typical expectation is 5% - 10% of working time spent travelling per year (as a guide, only).
Ability to travel internationally may also be required; however, international travel is expected to be minimal.
