Burns & McDonnell Graduate Cable Engineer in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Description

JOB PURPOSE

To gain experience and develop in-depth knowledge and skills in all areas associated with high voltage cable systems engineering (predominantly above 33kV), through undertaking engineering analysis and design on power transmission and distribution projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work under the guidance of senior engineers to produce detailed high voltage underground cable design packages, compliant to required client and national technical standards (ENA/BS/IEC/IEEE), including preparing calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation.

  • Participate in FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.

  • Support the preparation of technical solutions for project proposals.

  • Work independently or as part of a project team and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Support ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects, at all times.

  • Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of cable and electrical system design.

  • Understand wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning, in order to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.

  • Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell’s UK Integrated Management System.

  • Always strive to offer world-class customer service, to drive client success.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in an electrical based engineering discipline, from an accredited institution. A degree in a mechanical based engineering discipline may also be considered.

  • IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.

  • Knowledge of using CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD) for engineering design.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply diversified knowledge of principles and practices to a range of assignments.

  • Able to manage tasks on multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.

  • Able to work autonomously and/or as part of a project team.

  • Pro-active in building knowledge and understanding of the electricity transmission and distribution industry.

  • Engaged in the engineering community and how we can drive success for our clients.

  • Ability to maintain focus on technical work to meet deadlines.

  • Attention to detail in production of design drawings and technical documentation.

  • Ability to develop innovative and practical solutions to a range of problems, and an understanding of how one issue may be part of a much larger solution.

  • Ability to make an effective and collaborative contribution to the team through sharing knowledge, promoting ideas, and valuing the contribution of all team members.

  • Driven to provide outstanding customer service.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant professional Engineering Institution (e.g. IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE etc.).

TRAVEL

Ability to travel nationally is required for the role. Level of travel may vary significantly over time depending on project and client requirements, but typical expectation is 5% - 10% of working time spent travelling per year (as a guide, only).

Ability to travel internationally may also be required; however, international travel is expected to be minimal.
