The Offshore Marine Technical Manager is responsible for establishing consistency and direction in our technical groups through leadership, direction, and oversight of the technical staff.

The primary mission is to provide engineering leadership and direction to the Burns & McDonnell Offshore Cabling team in order to position Burns & McDonnell as a leading company in the offshore cable engineering field. Technical Manager will support the organization by establishing market trends and opportunities and providing direction for annual goals to improve technical excellence.

The position will, at the direction of the Director of Offshore Wind, support the Burns & McDonnell Offshore Wind vision, mission and values including the development of market specific business, strategies, long-term client relationships and promotion of a successful team-orientated environment.

The additional mission for the Offshore Marine Technical Manager is to foster a culture where technical excellence is valued, recognized, and rewarded for the importance it brings to the organization.

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead engineer providing leadership, guidance and directly performing, as required, the execution of all aspects of offshore cabling design and engineering activities.

  • Provide sector expertise, as required, to all other departments within the company.

  • Support the Director of Offshore Wind in identifying, directing and implementing business strategies for the Offshore Wind Team, including operational, marketing, pricing, sales and customer retention strategies.

  • Assist with the preparation of proposals and scope development, including:

  • Feasibility opportunities

  • Conceptual designs, front end engineering design, detailed design and execution plans

  • Functional specifications

  • Review of supplier documentation

  • Engineering / project cost estimates and schedules

  • Participation as required in complete electrical system design opportunities

  • Develop relationships with potential partners within the Offshore Wind Sector.

  • Support the development of technical staff and provide guidance to develop technical staff into leadership roles.

  • Cultivate, facilitate, and guide technical execution best practices and documentation across departments.

  • Support the application of design-related quality reviews to the practices of the business line.

  • Identify and develop future technical staff.

  • Recruit, interview, assess and hire prospective technical candidates as needed in collaboration with department management.

  • Help to establish and maintain accountability for deliverables.

  • Identify and assign appropriate development and maintenance of technical resources through teams (specifications, design tools, technology, etc.)

  • Support internal technical training for department, collaborating with resource management to maintain training consistency, effectiveness, and vision.

  • Support continued training for technical staff, establishing balance between internal and external training.

  • Oversee training and development for potential Project Engineers and Technical Consultants.

  • Foster and grow mentorship and coaching platform for department technical career tracks.

  • Foster thought leadership mentality at all levels and positions across departments.

  • Identify and communicate offshore wind market trends.

  • Responsible for strategically maintaining and communicating relevant opportunities for industry involvement, including societies and conference attendance.

  • Support coordination with appropriate business line leadership and department leadership to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to our technical business.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgement in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Collaborate with technical staff to drive industry focus.

  • Drive a culture of quality and continual improvement.

  • Ensure the requirements of the Burns & McDonnell Quality Management System are observed.

  • Support diversity initiatives.

  • Position will work with a high degree of autonomy.

  • Advocate safety in the department and division.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of 7 years of related professional experience.

  • Demonstrated technical ability internally and externally.

  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact.

  • Demonstrated excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.

  • Proven collaboration, facilitation, and organization problem solving skills in previous roles.
