Burns & McDonnell Electrical Engineer / Distribution Modernization in Brea, California
The Staff Electrical Engineer will work to create world class designs for projects including new distribution grid technologies, power system protection, microgrids, smart meters, distribution grid services, Volt/VAR optimization and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The Staff Electrical Engineer will work with a project team to implement effective and creative solutions for the distribution grid according to budget constraints, design factors and client needs. For various projects, the Staff Electrical Engineer will use fundamental data analytics techniques and algorithms to provide insights into project efficiency and to establish overall distribution system visibility and awareness.
Perform electrical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
Create design deliverables for project needs as set forth by the project manager.
Research and compile project related data as required by the project manager.
Apply strong knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the electrical engineering services industry.
Perform field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
Leverage commercially available simulation software and other tools to evaluate different scenarios and make informed recommendations to the client.
Produce reports and visualizations to communicate technical results and interpretation of trends; effectively communicate findings and recommendations to all areas of the business.
Evaluate DER interconnections for feasibility and completeness and make recommendations to accommodate them into the distribution grid.
Gather, clean up and evaluate data coming from sensors, relays, meters, and other sources to provide various insight into the distribution system and its performance.
Create field device settings based on detailed engineering analysis to implement a project specific solution into the distribution grid for the client.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for 1-year experience.
3 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Exhibits attention to detail and strong organization skills.
Demonstrated collaboration and team building experience.
Strong knowledge of the electrical distribution grid and its components.
Proficient in some or all technologies that support the distribution grid, including solar, battery storage, VAR compensating devices, smart inverters, AMI, etc.
Familiarity with data analysis techniques using tools such as SQL, Python, and R desired.
