Burns & McDonnell Construction Global Practice Lead in Calgary, Alberta

The Regional Construction Design-Build Global Practice Leader is responsible for the strategic development and overall leadership of the Regional Construction Design-Build Global Practice. This includes responsibility for all construction Design-Build market segments, growing the practice in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, profitability, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service.

Specific areas of responsibility include the following:

  • Represent and lead the Canada Construction Design-Build Practice.

  • Identify key target clients for BMcD and organize a focused sales approach strategy.

  • Working with key Global Practice and Regional Office leadership, be responsible for the following activities:

  • Recruit key project staff with construction management capabilities.

  • Manage a team – define an organization and work with office leadership to build a multidisciplinary team to deliver EPC and Program/Project Management services to clients.

  • Coordinate and align with BMcD corporate best practices for safety, quality, project controls, procurement, subcontract administration, legal, and field construction operations.

  • Understand multiple EPC contract delivery models, including lump sum, reimbursable, target price, fixed fee, fee at risk, joint venture and guaranteed maximum contracting.

  • Support global practices as necessary to assist in development and administration of marketing and client maintenance monthly and annual budgets.

  • Develop and implement project execution quality and financial controls.

  • Conduct routine project management training and champion employee development.

  • May also serve as project manager on key EPC projects.

  • Develop a long-term strategic plan for growth and sustainability of the CDB business.

  • Identify, develop and direct the implementation of business strategies for the practice, including operational strategies and procedures, marketing strategies and pricing strategies, and sales and customer retention strategies. Must be able to manage profitability and billable hours on projects and achieve the stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Execute projects that meet or exceed client expectations for quality, schedule and budget.

  • Plan, coordinate, communicate and facilitate activities of several disciplines on projects of all sizes from conception through completion. Successful completion of projects by collaborating and coordinating with internal and external clients.

  • Initiate or assists in client proposal development and contract negotiations; responsible for coordinating project planning including scoping, budgeting, maintaining schedules, communicating and managing deadlines and establishing and performing to critical project objectives.

  • Ensure adherence to Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program.

  • Responsible for maintaining Burns & McDonnell Safety program requirements.

  • Assemble and manage team that will do the following in support of growing the practice:

  • Create and cultivate key relationships within target client organizations.

  • Support global practices as necessary to develop a client service plan which includes a vertical relationship plan for the target client organizations.

  • Identify project opportunities early and facilitate go/no-go decisions in cooperation with office leadership, global practice leadership, and CDB practice leadership.

  • Facilitate strategic efforts to preposition for projects before RFP release.

  • Support global practices as necessary to lead or facilitate proposal development for project pursuits.

  • Support global practices as necessary to lead contract reviews and negotiations for projects.

  • Support construction project teams after award with negotiating and execution of all construction subcontracts.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key partners, fabricators, and construction contractors.

  • This position is responsible for the sales, revenue and net income goals for the CDB Global Practice.

Measures of Performance: (These performance measures will be quantified in cooperation with the Global Practice Leadership and Regional Office Leadership.)

  • Attainment of key annual business plan goals such as safety, sales, revenue and income for the Canada CDB Practice.

  • Growth of the Canada CDB Practice based on sales, revenue, net income (profitability) and staff size.

  • Attainment of billable time targets for CDB staff.

  • Ability to manage profitability on projects.

  • Ability to attract, hire, develop, and retain the best people within the organization.

  • Ability to execute projects meeting or exceeding client expectations for quality, schedule and budget.

  • Ability to execute projects in a manner to meet or exceed internal expectations for quality, schedule, labor/cost budgets, project profitability, safety and client satisfaction.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or related field from an accredited curriculum.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in management. Experience must include at least 5 years successful management of EPC projects, which would include proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

  • Must have ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of government, industry, and public contracts on project-related matters.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills and ability to process and manage project budgets and financial data.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Preferred project experience includes energy related projects such as power generation, transmission and Oil, Gas & Chemicals.
