Burns & McDonnell Assistant Department Manager - Substation (Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois

Description

This position will be responsible for the supervision, training, and direction of electrical engineers in the Chicago T&D Substation Department. Along with the duties below, this position will continue to include some substation engineering assignments. Duties/responsibilities include the following:

  • Advocate for safety in the department.

  • Recruit candidates that align with MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies and business objectives.

  • Co-manage the Chicago substation internship program with the other substation assistant department manager.

  • Support the early careers recruiting team to drive recruiting efforts at colleges and universities in the Midwest.

  • Coordinate team and mentor assignments of department staff with substation department managers and project managers/engineers to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Review employee performance and conduct development meetings (90 day and annual performance appraisals, mid-year reviews, coaching sessions, etc.).

  • Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.

  • Drive culture of quality and continual improvement.

  • Provide overall leadership to the team through effective communication, empowering others, and servant leadership.

  • Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short- and long-term goals and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.

  • Build strong partnerships with Kansas City and other regional office teams, including the Burns & McDonnell India team.

  • Identify training needs for the department and support/develop training programs. Collaborate with other departments on shared training.

  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of organization to staff.

  • Approve timecards and maintain billable time.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Support and lead initiatives within the substation department.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, environmental science, construction management or related field from accredited program.

  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience. Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.
