Job Information

Burns & McDonnell Assistant Department Manager in Chicago, Illinois


This is a part time position in addition to normal substation design engineering duties. This position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of Assistant level engineers within the Substation Department of the T&D Global Practice in Chicago. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by substation department management and seniormanagement:

  • Advocating for safety within thedepartment.

  • Recruit, develop, train and retainintern and assistant levelengineers.

  • Coordinate team and mentor assignments of engineers with substation department managers, project managers and project engineers for the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Review employee performance and conduct development meetings (90 day and annual performance appraisals, mid-year reviews, coaching sessions,etc.).

  • Identify training needs for engineers and support/develop training programs for the department. Collaborate with other departments on sharedtraining.

  • Provide overall leadership to the team through strong communication, empowering of others, and servant leadership.

  • Responsible for fostering a healthy and vibrant employee-owner culture within the team through the leverage of sound team-building practices, the promotion and administration of effective conflict resolution, the promotion of ownership mentality, a healthy work-life balance, and community engagement.

  • Assisting the Substation Department Management team to develop business initiatives toimprove profitability and/orefficiencies.

  • Advancing and developing Department tools and work flows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and projectexecution.

  • Providing input into areas of concern and direction to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, andquality.

  • Assisting with and leading Substation related proposals.

  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of organization tostaff.

  • Approve time cards and watch over billabletime.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment to anticipate and solve complex problems.

  • Other duties asassigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accreditedprogram.

  • Minimum 5 years professionalexperience.

  • High voltage substation designexperience.

  • Strong preference for thefollowing:

  • Experience interviewing and recruiting with Burns & McDonnell.

  • Excellent oral and written communicationskills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees andmanagement.

  • Experience providing performance feedback for project team members.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and managechange.

  • Professional Engineeringlicense.

  • History of high performance as demonstrated and documented in the Burns & McDonnell performance managementsystem.
