Burns & McDonnell Assistant Pipeline Designer - Pipelines (Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois


Position may include full or partial responsibility of the following assignments

  • Use of design software to generate pipeline plans, profiles, and details

  • Produce complete route maps, alignment, profile and workspace from verbal or written description from the design engineer.

  • Assist in pipeline planning, preparation of construction documentation and environmental plans

  • Analyze reports, maps, drawings, tests, survey and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design projects

  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Review design drawings for quality assurance within scope, budget and schedule. Perform projects tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

  • Responsible for the revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information are stored in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • Responsible for clear and concise written and verbal communications, as it relates to the project client coordination.

  • Develop and improve processes and tools for effective production

  • Provide leadership, training and mentoring to less experienced CAD detailers and team members


  • Associate's degree and five years of related experience or six years of progressive detailing and design experience OR Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and three years related experience.

  • Advanced understanding of design software: Microstation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Excel to develop design deliverables. Preference for familiarity with CADWorx and Plant 3D.

  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs

  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings

  • Knowledge in the theory and practices of engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives

  • Strong preference for those with:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Capability of solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard approaches, techniques, procedures and criteria
