Burns & McDonnell Civil Engineering Intern - Transmission Site-Civil (Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a civil engineering intern to take control of their career potential in our Chicago office. This position will partner with a multi-discipline team to develop designs of electrical substations to support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity across the United States and Canada. Opportunities may include, but not limited to:

  • Thinking creatively to address the complex challenges faced by the largest utilities in North America.

  • Performing site grading and stormwater management designs.

  • Developing permitting support documentation and narratives.

  • Providing support for our clients during permitting and construction.

  • Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.

  • Supporting a team of single- or multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.

  • Presenting designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.

  • Corresponding and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.

  • Participating in project proposal efforts.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Pursuit of Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Currently enrolled, and in good standing, in a post-secondary education and/or technical certificate program in a field related to the work done in the department.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
