Burns & McDonnell Project Manager/Lead Engineer - Hydroelectric Power in Chicago, Illinois


Burns & McDonnell, an industry-leading employee-owned engineering, consulting, and construction company, has an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager/Lead Engineer to assist us to continue to develop and expand in our growing Hydroelectric Power market.

The Project Manager / Lead Engineer is responsible for identifying opportunities, client strategy, proposal submission, development and execution of projects and pursuits. The Project Manager / Lead Engineer will lead projects in a dynamic and customer-oriented manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service. The Project Manager / Lead Engineer will be responsible for fostering a culture of proactive communication, continuous improvement, and a focus on serving our customers and increasing our customer base. The Project Manager / Lead Engineer will assist with the development of a hydro strategy to further Burns & McDonnell’s position, establishing the sales and business development plans for set growth objectives, and facilitating collaboration with regional activities, pursuits, and projects.

This individual will be experienced in design, construction, commissioning, diagnosis, testing, and troubleshooting of hydroelectric power facilities including primary equipment, balance of plant, and infrastructure. Specific experience in maintenance, life-extension, and modernization of existing hydroelectric power facilities would be an asset.

The Project Manager/Lead Engineer will be accountable to lead project teams to develop and deliver projects to make our clients successful. The project scope will range from technical support and troubleshooting, to design services, to full engineer/procure/construct (EPC). In addition, this individual will be expected to interface and communicate with customers and key stakeholders on a regular basis. Visits to sites, customers’ facilities, suppliers, and other miscellaneous travel to facilitate business growth is expected.

Job Functions:

  • Executes complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.

  • Develop and evaluate plans for major projects.

  • Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient, or testing is advisable.

  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports or project design assignments.

  • Will have progressive design and project management responsibilities.

  • Will provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Participate in the development of construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, project staffing planning, and construction planning.

  • Regularly meeting and corresponding with current and prospective customers or outside personnel.

  • Direct coordination of project activities with clients, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.

  • Initiate or assist in proposal development and contract negotiations.

  • Responsible for establishing critical project objectives, project planning, budgeting, execution, and closure.

  • Collaborate and partner with internal BMCD global practices and regional offices to provide internal and external solutions to the hydroelectric power market

  • Provide industry expertise with respect to the competition.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 7 years related experience (completion of master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience).

  • Minimum seven (7) years’ experience working in the hydroelectric and construction industries, including five (5) or more years managing hydroelectric projects.

  • Experience successfully pursuing proposals and leading proposal efforts

  • Must have the ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Experience with Kaplan, Francis, and Pelton turbines is a plus. Understand the related balance of plant systems related to Hydroelectric power facilities.

  • EPC project experience is highly preferred.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Previous consultant experience is preferred.

  • Understanding the market and being acquainted and connected with numerous hydroelectric clients and users is strongly preferred.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Professional Engineer License is required.

  • Ability to travel is required. Travel will range from 30% to 50%.
