Job Information

Burns & McDonnell Right of Way/Real Estate Project Manager in Chicago, Illinois



The Right of Way Specialist will manage or execute land acquisitions, negotiations, property research and title searches. This may include non-environmental permitting support, assisting with construction coordination, and restoration on Right of Way projects in a variety of locations.

Position will be located inChicago or Detroit; a valid Illinois or Michigan realestate license is required.


  • Provide project management and oversight of real estate activities for linear capital projects.

  • Provide leadership for real estate activities as part of an integrated project delivery team.

  • Managing client expectations related to the deliverable.

  • Create and manage project-specific land acquisition plan(s).

  • Initiate or assist in contract preparation and execution.

  • Create and manage project budget related to land acquisition.

  • Create and manage project schedule related to land acquisition.

  • Manage project staff and subcontractors.

  • Provide strategic direction to acquisition staff.

  • Provide technical guidance to acquisition staff.

  • Be responsible for preparation of project status, technical, and acquisitionreports for the project team.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate, Land Use Planning, Business Administration or related field. Applicable experience may be substituted for the degree requirement (real estate agent or broker, etc.)

  • 5-7 years of real estate or ROW experience in the utility industry.

  • Experience supervising/managing staff including ROW agents, surveyors, and/or other subcontractors.

  • Experience reading and interpreting plan and profile drawings and survey drawings.

  • Working knowledge of general real estate law.

  • Working understanding of real estate title work.

  • Ability to work as an effective team member.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong teamworking skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

  • Member of the International Right of Way Association (preferred but not required).

  • Proficiency in use of database software and MS Office programs

Valid driver's license required. Must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
