Burns & McDonnell’s office in Chicago is looking for a Staff Civil Designer to generate 2D & 3D drawings for both new and retrofit designs at power generation facilities. This individual will be the lead civil designer on a multi-disciplinary design team at a successful and growing company. Be part of a high-performance group focusing on emerging power plant-based reciprocating engine technology that’s being adopted across the U.S. and the globe.

The Staff Civil Designer will work on an integrated design team within our Energy Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Responsible for the Civil design at power generation facilities using Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads (InRoads) – (previous experience with other programs will be considered).

  • Plan and develop detailed design for site layouts, site grading, storm drainage, SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan), roads, rail, ponds, ash landfill, and other civil-related components, as well as underground coordination with other disciplines and permitting support.

  • Provide a range of drawing production work including site layouts, erosion control, grading plans, grading sections, road & rail profiles, stormwater, and details.

  • Use CAD software including Bentley MicroStation V8i or CONNECT, Bentley InRoads SS2 or OpenRoads Designer, Autodesk AutoCAD 2018, Autodesk Civil 3D 2018, AutoTURN 10, and SmartPlant.

  • Use other supporting software including Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Office 365, Google Earth Pro, and Global Mapper 17.

  • Use 3D CAD software to generate surfaces, road & rail alignments, pipe networks, cut & fill quantities, corridors, manage styles, and template development.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of CAD standards and best practices.

  • Learn and successfully apply company, client, and project drafting standards and procedures.

  • Demonstrate ability to apply formulas, principles, and practices to complete required drawings.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of assigned and related disciplines.

  • Coordinate drafting activities with other designers, drafters, and design disciplines.

  • Successfully communicate and correspond with internal design resources and external clients and personnel.

  • Execute design changes and project drawing revisions.

  • Maintain CAD proficiency and work toward mastering current CAD systems.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field and a minimum of eight years related experience or Associate’s degree and 10 years related experience or 11 years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Expert design software understanding of MicroStation and OpenRoads is preferred.

  • Expert design software understanding of AutoCAD is beneficial.

  • Expert design software understanding of Civil 3D and SmartPlant is a bonus.

  • Expert knowledge in civil design, calculations and design systems.

  • Expert knowledge in the theory and practices of civil discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Ability to independently complete required design.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
