Burns & McDonnell Staff Civil Engineer - Water Construction Management, / Regional Field Travel (Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois


Burns & McDonnell’s Chicago Regional Office is looking for a Staff Civil Engineer - Water Construction Management to support its growing presence in the Midwest water market. This is a position with the opportunity to travel 50% or more of the time across the country. This position provides the opportunity to grow professionally within one of the industry’s leading firms. Potential projects include drinking water (treatment, storage, and distribution), wastewater (treatment, collection, and conveyance), stormwater (collection, conveyance, detention, and green infrastructure).

The Staff Civil Engineer will perform field activities such as site investigations, inspections, and assessments for Burns & McDonnell projects in a variety of locations. This position provides guidance and direction by utilizing knowledge of standards, specifications, construction plans, document control, applicable codes, and Burns & McDonnell policies and procedures. Provide Resident Engineering and Inspection of construction projects to ensure contractors are building projects in accordance with project plans, specifications, and industry standards.

  • Create field reports and documentation of daily work performed on project sites.

  • Produce accurate quantity data for use in the generation of contractor pay estimates and material certification.

  • Coordinate with designers as required for shop drawing reviews, requests for information, and change orders.

  • Maintain communication with Project Managers throughout the course of the project so they are informed of site progress.

  • Maintain communication with the Section Manager throughout the course of the project regarding project progress and issues.

  • Solve technical problems related to the project parameters.

  • Interface with clients as needed.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Have the ability to work productively in an office setting during downtime on project sites.

  • Must be willing to travel 50% (travel will include both short and long-term assignments; region is east of the Mississippi)

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum 3 years of civil engineering experience. Consulting and construction of municipal infrastructure experience preferred.

  • Successful completion (i.e., passing) FE or EIT required.

  • Licensed PE in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain license.

  • IDOT Documentation Certified or willing to complete course prior to starting.

  • Strong knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work with and maintain positive relationships with various governmental agencies, clients, contractors, residents, and other stakeholders.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Computer skills in engineering/CAD-based software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D) programs is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, leadership, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
