Burns & McDonnell Staff Mechanical Engineer - Food & Consumer Products (Multiple Locations) in Chicago, Illinois


The Staff Mechanical Engineer will work on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government and military facilities. The Staff Mechanical Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting mechanical plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.

  • Supports process/mechanical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.

  • Design of projects within the food and consumer product manufacturing industries. Processes include fluid and liquid handling, dry material handling, and packaging of both liquid and dry materials. Projects include Greenfield and Brownfield/Retrofit.

  • Prepare mechanical equipment: packaged equipment / specifications and data sheets, Request for Qualifications (RFQ's), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.

  • Develop the project's equipment layout and piping design with designers.

  • Review vendor drawings; data interface with suppliers, clients other engineering disciplines, detailers, designers.

  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders.

  • Leads field inspections, installation, measurements or calculations to support project activities.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.

  • 3 years engineering experience, consulting preferred.

  • Knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Knowledge of design codes (ASME, ANSI, PIP) preferred.

  • Some familiarity with Sanitary Design including 3A standards and CGMP preferred.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Familiarity with Navisworks, AutoCAD, CAESAR II, & PDF Markup Tool preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.
