Burns & McDonnell has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Commissioning Engineer with a desire to grow personally and professionally.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial mindset to join our national team with a passion to work alongside engineers, architects, construction teams, and owners to make their projects more successful.

As an employee-owner you will work within a multi-discipline team to manage jobsite commissioning activities, client expectations, scopes of work, develop proposals and coordinate resources for your projects. You will interface with owners and facilities managers to develop and implement a commissioning process which will achieve their goals and make them successful. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with facilities, construction, or engineering backgrounds who have experience in Digital Control Systems, Building Automation Systems, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Life Safety, Building Enclosure, Security, Communications, or other Specialty Systems.

The Senior Commissioning Engineer will perform the following:

  • Execute commissioning, retro-commissioning and energy related projects.

  • Plan, schedule, and perform work for large projects and programs with support from our national practice.

  • Manage staff and assistant level commissioning team to execute projects. Responsible for the quality control of their deliverables.

  • Manage subcontractors scope of work and quality control.

  • Lead meetings with owner, operation and maintenance, design and construction personnel to understand project goals and schedule to ensure commissioning is properly coordinated.

  • Prepare commissioning plans, specifications and checklist and functional test documentation based on Burns & McDonnell standards.

  • Review design, equipment submittals, operation and maintenance manual, start-up reports, checklists, and training programs.

  • Perform site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate new and existing systems, witness equipment start-up and testing.

  • Perform functional testing of highly technical systems. Document commissioning results and performance issues.

  • Collaborate with owner, operation and maintenance, design and construction personnel in recommending remedial measures.

  • Assist with the development and refinement of methodologies, tools, and standards in support of a growing national and worldwide commissioning practice.

  • Assist with training operation and maintenance personnel to maintain commissioned systems and perform a continuous commissioning program.

  • Ability to travel up to 25 % of the time as projects dictate.

  • All other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited university is required.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.

  • A minimum of 7 years of direct or related experience with retro-commissioning, energy evaluation complex HVAC, lighting, power and control systems.

  • Experience with new construction commissioning and/or commissioning of new retro-fits.

  • Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.

  • Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.

  • High level of attention to detail with ability to quality-review work.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Ability to forensically evaluate energy-consuming systems and detect and evaluate deficiencies, quantify energy losses, and determine cost.

  • Expert with different types of stand-alone monitoring equipment including flow and electrical meters and temperature loggers. Ability to evaluate and troubleshoot these systems.

  • Knowledge of DOE-2, eQUEST, Energy Pro, and other modeling software.

  • Certification in the Commissioning Process, as an Energy Manager, or LEED Accreditation a plus.

  • Expert knowledge of site safety procedures, including electrical safety.

  • Experience developing and managing work plans, schedules and budgets.

  • Experience providing leadership to a diverse project team a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience in combined heat and power/cogeneration, central utility plants, data centers, healthcare facilities, laboratories, water/wastewater facilities, controls, building envelope, TAB, NETA electrical testing, renewable energy and other specialties a plus.

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients, including, but not limited to DOE, aerospace, military, food and consumer product manufacturers, pharmaceutical, laboratories, and others necessary to sell and complete work.

  • Completion of/or ability to obtain OSHA 8 hour Safety Training Course is required.
