Burns & McDonnell Staff Mechanical Engineer - Mission Critical in Columbus, Ohio
Burns & McDonnell has opened a new office in Columbus, Ohio, with a team focused on mission-critical datacenter projects! This opportunity hires directly into that team and into an industry of more than $17 billion. The Columbus office is growing a full complement of professionals with expertise in in architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction, and project management.

This is a major reason why Burns & McDonnell is assembling a large team with integrated specialties who can take development of these mission-critical facilities from early planning, environmental and siting studies to full-scale engineering design and construction.”
This individual will assist project teams of engineers, designers and architects to create world class design on a variety of projects from concept design through completion of construction. Project focus would be data centers and telecommunications facilities but could include a variety of other facilities including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, manufacturing, airports, or institutional.
Specific areas of responsibility include the following:
Designing mechanical systems/equipment to provide for a useful and safe workplace
Advise clients regarding mechanical systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.
Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.
Participate in developing the design criteria for air and water side of building mechanical systems
Reviews mechanical designs and specifications of equipment or systems being purchased or fabricated.
Developing concept studies and design
Additional opportunity exists to develop Project Management skills:
Assist Project Managers with day to day management of project execution, deliverables, quality, schedule, contracts, subcontracts, proposals, and client interface.
Facilitate and execute contract administration responsibility for RFIs, submittals, change management and claim mitigation.
Assist in project reporting status, risks, schedule and cost.
Enforces standards and practices.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from accredited program is required.
Minimum of 3 years of related mechanical design experience
Knowledge of mechanical design principles, standards, and codes
Expert software and computer skills required including AutoCAD, BIM (Revit), 3D Rendering Programs, and Microsoft Professional Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills are required.
EIT professional designation with ambition to attain PE license
Data center or telecommunication facility experience
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling with either Autodesk Computational Fluid Design software or 6Sigma, preferably with data centers.
Knowledge of critical facility electrical design
Ability to write specifications for mechanical equipment, devices, and material
Familiarity with other building systems and coordination with those systems and components
