Burns & McDonnell Electrical Engineering Intern - Transmission & Distribution - Substation (Conshohocken Office) in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania


Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned engineering, construction, and consulting firm with offices worldwide. The Conshohocken office is seeking qualified engineering intern candidates for the Transmission and Distribution Substation Department.

From their first day, interns work alongside staff to engineer and design solutions for Burns & McDonnell clients on project teams. Interns assist in the preparation of design deliverables including drawings, specifications, and calculations for high-voltage (13kV to 500kV) electrical power substations. Designs include:

  • Substation layout and physical design.

  • Power systems analysis.

  • High-voltage power equipment including circuit breakers, power transformers, instrumentation transformers, switchgear, and other related equipment.

  • Control, automation, and protection systems using protective relays and other related equipment.

  • Telecommunications systems using Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), routers, multiplexers, and other related equipment.

In addition to engineering responsibilities, interns will:

  • Assist with tasks that may include filing, scanning, data entry, documentation, and making/delivering presentations.

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data.

  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Assist with ad-hoc projects as assigned by managers.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Pursuit of Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Currently enrolled, and in good standing, in a post-secondary education and/or technical certificate program in a field related to the work done in the department.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
