Burns & McDonnell’s office in Denver, CO, is looking for an Assistant Civil/Pipeline Designer to perform pipeline design on a variety of utility projects. The Assistant Civil/Pipeline Designer will work within our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Assist in various phases of planning, proposal preparation, site evaluations, analytical designs, report preparation, specifications development, and preparation of construction documentation and environmental plans.

  • Assist in designing various oil & gas pipeline/gas utility projects including site design, land development, roads, railroads, and waterbody crossings.

  • Assist with a full range of drawing production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Assist with a variety of assignments specific to the oil & gas industry, using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, as well as sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Assist with analyzing reports, maps, drawings, tests, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design projects.

  • Process and incorporate survey data into designs and perform QA/QC on survey data received by others.

  • Interpret and apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.

  • Complete plan and profile alignment sheets, typical detail drawings, hydrostatic test drawings and horizontal directional drilling drawings.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into civil design and layouts.

  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • All other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and three years related experience or associate's degree and five years related experience or six years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Basic understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables.

  • BlueSky experience preferred.

  • Previous experience with GIS software is a plus.

  • Basic knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of civil discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Interest in coaching less-experienced drafters and/or designers.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.
