Burns & McDonnell Assistant Mechanical Engineer - Power Generation in Denver, Colorado

Burns & McDonnell has an exciting opportunity in our Denver Office’s Energy Group for an assistant mechanical engineer that focuses on power generating facilities.

The position will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist in the engineering design for energy generation facilities and related industries.

  • Assist experienced engineers with process piping design, system analysis, hydraulic flow modeling, pump sizing, equipment selection, design calculations, material lists, engineering reports, contract documents and drawing review for industrial projects associated with power generation.

  • Preparation of data sheets, requests for quotes (RFQ), and requests for proposals (RFP) for mechanical equipment including turbines, pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks, control valves, and piping specials.

  • Develop material procurement and construction specification contracts.

  • Develop contract drawings including P&IDs, composite plans, sections, isometrics, and engineering details.

  • Effectively communicate with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, and detailers/designers as required to complete assignments.

  • Review supplier or contractor proposals and develop technical bid evaluations.

  • Participate in contract administration; review vendor drawings to conform with contract specifications.

  • Visit equipment supplier shops or construction sites to collect information, answer Requests for Information (RFIs), report on progress, and confirm conformance to specifications.

  • Periodically complete Field Assignment(s) during construction.

  • Complete assignments with a focus on safety and client service.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from and ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum of 1 year related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience).

  • Experience with power generation equipment and systems.

  • Experience working with fossil fuel power plants preferred.

  • Effective and positive leadership qualities with an ability to learn from experienced professionals.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills with an ability to communicate throughout all levels of an organization.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency in AFT Fathom, AutoCAD, SmartPlant 3D, and Navisworks preferred.
