Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Designer - Energy (Denver) in Denver, Colorado

Description

Burns & McDonnell’s Denver, CO regional office is seeking to hire an Electrical Designer within our Power Generation Global Practice to support a variety of power generation projects including solar, energy storage, gas generation, and hydroelectric facilities!

Designs encompass electrical bulk power generation equipment and all associated auxiliary power equipment. Equipment includes rotating machines, such as generators and motors, large power transformers, generator circuit breakers, isolated phase bus duct, non-segregated phase bus duct, switchgear, motor control centers, small power transformers, and variable frequency drives. The wide range of projects provide opportunities on both multi-discipline and electrical only projects.

Multi-disciplined power generation projects require designers to work in a diverse project team environment and exhibit the ability to develop consensus in identifying the optimum solution to complex problems. These complex assignments require the application of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods. Position will require extensive interface with equipment suppliers/vendors, and with Burns & McDonnell engineers, construction professionals, designers, and detailers locally in the Denver office as well as remotely in various offices in the United States.

The Electrical Designer will work on an integrated team within our Energy division (Global Practice) and perform the following duties:

  • Assist in planning and preparing detailed drawings for power generation facility layout and design development. Drawings will include general arrangements, single line diagrams, above/below grade grounding and raceway plans, panel schedules, wiring/schematic diagrams, and sections and details.

  • Use SmartPlant 3D, Navisworks, AutoCAD and other design software to assist in modeling project designs, managing styles and template development.

  • Demonstrate ability to apply codes, formulas, principles, and practices to complete required designs. Utilize, interpret, and apply the National Electrical Code for equipment layouts, raceway designs, and wire, cable, fuse, and circuit breaker sizing.

  • Develop grounding plans, prepare conduit and cable tray layouts, perform cable sizing and fill calculations, generate bills of materials and cable schedules, create equipment and panel wiring diagrams from vendor submittals under the direction of the engineer.

  • Provide a range of drawing production work including problem analysis, layout, detailing, drafting, and calculations on project of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Coordinate drafting activities with other designers, drafters, engineers and design disciplines.

  • Interface with engineering and construction on material selection, material take off development and constructability of designs.

  • Train, mentor, and develop less experienced drafting, detailing and design staff members.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and seven years related experience or associate's degree and eight years related experience or nine years progressive detailing and design experience. Strong understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs

  • SmartPlant 3D, Revit, and Navisworks experience is preferred.

  • Thermal power generation and/or solar/storage experience is a preferred.

  • Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

  • Basic knowledge in design, calculations and design codes and standards.

  • Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Compensation Range

$105,000 - $145,000

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
