Burns & McDonnell’s office in Detroit, MI, is looking for an Electrical Distribution Designer to provide technical design support on 4kV to 40kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects. The Electrical Distribution Designer will enjoy significant responsibility and autonomy while having the support of senior engineers. Additionally, this group’s established mentorship program will provide the platform for this individual to grow toward becoming a Senior Lead/Project Designer, bringing with it the full execution of projects with respect to scope, design, client interaction and material/construction.

The Electrical Distribution Designer will report to the T&D department manager within our Transmission & Distribution Global Practice and will perform the following duties:

  • Assist in the design and drafting of engineering deliverables on multiple complex utility distribution projects and compile packages for construction.

  • Develop, modify and review design packages according to client and/or company design standards.

  • Maintain current knowledge of design and drafting procedures.

  • Interface with utility clients and collaborate with multiple offices.

  • Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting for review as well as perform quality reviews of design packages produced by others.

  • Demonstrate ability to apply formulas, principles, and practices to complete required drawings.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of assigned and related disciplines.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships as well as provide technical leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field and two years related experience or associate’s degree and four years related experience or five years progressive detailing and design experience. Previous distribution experience is highly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs. Exposure to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is desired.

  • Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

  • Basic knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline, such as utility design standards, NESC, and distribution construction techniques. Competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel 5%.
