Burns & McDonnell Senior Electrical Engineer in Detroit, Michigan

Description

Responsible for preparation of distribution voltage Substation construction documents. Experienced in either/both microprocessor based protection and control systems or layout of substations. Provide short term field support during construction.

Assignments may include:

  • Design distribution substations utilizing client standards including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, ground grid, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC and DC power systems, single lines, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring, and bill of materials.

  • Routing, design and execution of distribution line projects.

  • Perform distribution planning assignments.

  • Execute power flow, transfer capability, and economic dispatch associated with distribution congestion management scenarios.

  • Perform power system planning and operations including: transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis.

  • Prepare proposals and engineering/project cost estimates.

  • Prepare calculations and equipment specifications.

  • Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient or testing is advisable.

  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports or project design assignments. Progressive design and project management responsibilities.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel.

  • Some marketing responsibilities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • CYMDIST distribution or similar software experience.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from accredited program. Minimum 3 years distribution experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience). Understanding of distribution power flow. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Knowledgeable of telecommunications, Renewable and distribution generation integration, and advanced technologies a plus.

This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered. Completion of FE exam strongly preferred. Licensed PE professional a plus.
