Burns & McDonnell Senior Structural Engineer – Transmission & Distribution (Detroit) in Detroit, Michigan

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to take a prominent technical lead role in our Detroit T&D – Substation Group. Opportunities may include but are not limited to:

  • Innovating project approach to optimize safety, schedule, and profitability.

  • Collaborating with and supporting other disciplines, offices, and global practices.

  • Training and mentoring less experienced engineers in their technical and professional development.

  • Performing quality control reviews of engineering design, proposals, and other project deliverables.

  • Leading/overseeing standard substation Civil and Structural scope items including but not limited to:

  • Rigid bus analysis and design.

  • Design of electrical substation equipment and tensioned conductor support structures.

  • Design of large equipment foundations and support structure foundations.

  • Structural fire barriers and their foundation systems.

  • Design of secondary oil containment.

  • Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.

  • Leading a team of multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.

  • Presenting designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.

  • Corresponding, communicating, and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.

  • Leading project proposal efforts.

  • Advancing into leadership roles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from an ABET accredited program and licensure as a Professional Engineering (PE). Licensure as a Structural Engineer (SE) in the state of Illinois strongly preferred.

  • Seven (7) years of substation structural engineering experience, consulting preferred. Master of Science degree in civil or structural engineering may be substituted for one (1) year experience. Experience requirements and preferences include but are not limited to:

  • Having civil/structural substation experience with more than one utility is strongly preferred.

  • Experience on Gas Insulated (GIS), Air Insulated (AIS), and indoor substation projects is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and responding to construction submittals and RFI’s is required.

  • Experience in developing and reviewing technical construction specifications, white paper documents, and technical reports is strongly preferred.

  • Experience performing QC reviews of technical submittals and design work is required.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a dynamic, quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Strong knowledge in standard structural engineering techniques and principles.

  • Strong knowledge in substation electrical physical design principles.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong computer and analysis software skills (e.g. Risa3D, STAAD, Mathcad).
