Burns & McDonnell Senior Electrical Engineer - Substation Design in Fort Worth, Texas


Position will be responsible for performing physical design on various high-voltage (69-550kV) substation projects. Assignments cover the full range of project planning through design and construction support. The position will include reporting to project managers and directing design engineers and CADD/designer staff and performing design quality reviews.

Some specific duties & responsibilities include:

  • Designing substations utilizing client standards including bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, ground grid, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC and DC power systems, and cable lists;

  • Preparing calculations and design criteria documentation;

  • Preparing/creating construction documents for the installation of new or modifications of existing substations. Work includes bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and electrical details;

  • Preparing equipment specifications, analyzing bids, and making recommendations for purchase;

  • Developing scope of work, conceptual design for the projects, and execution plans;

  • Preparing engineering and construction cost and man-hour estimates and schedules;

  • Providing leadership, guidance, instruction and mentorship to less experienced staff members;

  • Meeting and corresponding with clients or outside personnel;

  • Supporting construction and substation and equipment commissioning;

  • Some marketing responsibilities;

  • Other duties will be assigned as required.


Minimum 7 years of experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience) in physical design of high voltage (69kV and above) air and gas insulated substations and power systems. Knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Substation physical layout and electrical clearances;

  • Substation rigid and strain bus design;

  • Substation ground grid design;

  • Substation surge and direct stroke protection;

  • Substation raceway design;

  • Relevant codes and standards such as ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NEMA and NESC.

Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communications skills. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments, and of devising new approaches to problems encountered. Ability to work in a team environment and to coordinate the work of various engineering disciplines and contractors to complete an integrated project.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program. Professional Engineer registration in a US state or Canadian Province required. Previous consulting or utility experience preferred. Valid driver's license required. Must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges.
