The Senior Environmental Advisor will lead environmental and siting studies, preparing permitting applications and analysing environmental data for various types of projects, including high-voltage transmission line routing, power generation construction activities and water treatment facilities.

Our base office is near Glasgow; however, travel will be required to serve sites across Scotland/ UK.We are therefore flexible on home location.

  • Provide a source of knowledge, advice and support to the business on environment and sustainability matters.

  • Lead environmental and siting studies, preparing permitting applications and analysing environmental data for various types of projects, including high-voltage transmission substations and other infrastructure construction projects.

  • Coordinate activities and deliverables with environmental specialist sub-contractors/ consultants, in fields of hazardous material management and remediation, ecology, archaeology, hydrology, environmental planning and consents, traffic, etc.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, SEPA, NatureScot, Environment Agency, Natural England, etc.

  • Engage positively with leadership and management teams, project delivery teams, design and engineering teams, corporate team in the USA.

  • Provide strategic, corporate, operational and project level advice and support to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, regulatory requirements and conformance to company environmental and sustainability policies, processes, standards and procedures.

  • Collaborate with our subcontractors and supply chain to deliver best value solutions whilst aligning with our corporate Environmental and Sustainability strategy, goals and objectives.

  • Effectively represent Burns & McDonnell’s Delivery Teams with clients, contractors and supply chain, subconsultants, statutory bodies, professional bodies, other interested parties.

  • Conduct business development activities to support the growth of Burns & McDonnell’s Environment and Sustainability Service offering, developing relationships for a growing client base for ENS Services.

  • Work with the Quality & Compliance Manager and SHES Manager to develop, review and ensure implementation of the Environmental Management System, including ISO 14001 certification.

  • Advise and support with obtaining environmental licences, permits and consents, and monitor compliance on construction projects, including advisory visits and assurance activities.

  • Provide guidance on environmental studies/ assessments and Risk Assessments and Method Statements to mitigate risks and prevent harm to people and the environment.

  • Prepare and deliver communications, including bulletins, alerts, toolbox talks, point of work risk assessment briefings and environmental training for site operatives and other staff.

  • Investigate environmental incidents and near misses, including collation and analysis of data, with reporting to provide effective recommendations for future actions and monitoring.

  • Coach and mentor co-workers on environmental management and sustainability, promoting good/ best practices, innovations and lessons learnt across the business and externally.

  • Lead by example, influencing and inspiring our managers, teams, and supply chain to strive for excellence in environmental management and sustainability.

  • Maintain personal development keeping up to date with knowledge and competency levels in relation to environmental management and sustainability.

  • Perform other duties as assigned, and comply with all Corporate policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related discipline across environmental engineering, geology, and natural sciences.

  • Minimum of 7 years in a high compliance construction industry.

  • Advantage if candidates bring experience in the power and/ or transmission sector.

Required

  • Chartered or working towards Chartership of a relevant Professional Institution (e.g., CIEEM, CIWEM, IEMA, IES, etc.)

  • Experienced in EMS and developing policies and procedures, briefing materials and training.

  • Experienced in environmental clerk of works, auditing, inspection and/ or management roles.

  • Required to be competent in understanding, assessing and advising on matters concerning:

  • site water management, runoff controls, engineering, discharge and abstraction permits,

  • waste management, documentation and exemptions,

  • earthworks, contaminated land, remediation and hazardous waste disposal,

  • air quality, noise and noise controls,in line with legislation and site-specific planning controls.

  • A passion for environmental protection and making a real difference.

  • A self-starter and finisher. Able to work on own or as part of a team.

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills, operating with empathy, clear communicator and influencer.

  • Able to remain calm and focused under pressure.

  • Computer literate.

Preferred

  • Active credential and/ or recent project experience as a CEEQUAL/ BREEAM Infrastructure Assessor or an Envision Sustainability Professional (from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure).

  • Working knowledge of, or familiarity with a range of sustainable development concepts:

  • biodiversity, net gain, ecosystem services and co-benefits,

  • green (versus grey) infrastructure,

  • climate risk assessment, resilience and adaptation,

  • greenhouse gas emissions, lifecycle assessment and science-based reduction targets,

  • embodied carbon and energy, carbon and water footprinting,

  • environmental product declaration (EPD),

  • circular economy principles in construction,

  • design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) and modern methods of construction (MMC),

  • sustainable construction plan/ sustainability action planning,

  • materiality assessment, risk/ opportunity matrix,

  • social value, stakeholder engagement and community benefits.

  • Preferably 10 years in a high compliance construction industry.
