Burns & McDonnell Mechanical Engineer/Fired Equipment in Houston, Texas


We are seeking to hire a Mechanical Engineer within our Oil, Gas & Chemicals global practice in our Houston, TX regional office!

This position focuses on the application and design of fired equipment in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, and may involve a variety of complex features.

  • Primary responsibilities include design and specification of thermal and mechanical design of fired heaters, HRSG’s, steam boilers, incinerators, thermal oxidizers, flares and other similar fired equipment

  • Supports equipment requisition packages, technical bid evaluation

  • Communicates equipment design to client and other design disciplines.

  • Responsible for supplier coordination, and coordination with inspectors

  • Reviews and approves design drawings

  • Review of vendor data and documentation

  • Participates in PHA’s, and reviews of PFDs , P&IDs

  • Participates in preparation of design guides, guide specifications and contract proposals

  • Monitors subcontracted technical services activities

  • Provides input to estimates, proposals, scheduling, manpower planning, etc.

  • Conducts field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information

  • May coordinate departmental and divisional project studies and report preparation assignments.

  • Support for FAT’s, installation, commissioning & startup


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering or engineering discipline from accredited program

  • Minimum 3 years related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience)

  • Candidate must have a strong interest in the design and specification of fired equipment. This position requires a competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Excellent written & verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrate familiarity with design codes and standards such as API-520/530/536/538/556/560/673, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes, and NFPA-85. Prior experience in the thermal and mechanical design of unfired heat transfer equipment is considered a plus, but not required

  • Successful completion of FE exam strongly preferred

  • PE license required once engagement period requirements are met

  • Must be eligible for TWIC
