Burns & McDonnell Senior Civil Engineer - Oil, Gas & Chemical in Houston, Texas


Burns & McDonnell is seeking to hire a Senior Civil Engineer within our Oil, Gas & Chemical Global Practice in Houston, TX.

Burns & McDonnell is an employee-owned firm and considered a leading consultant in the hydrocarbon processing industry and refined product terminals. We execute projects for major oil companies and other industrial clients, including pipeline terminals and truck, ship and rail loading facilities.

Successful candidates will be experienced in design and construction of projects in the oil, gas & chemical markets. Experience in crude and refined product terminals and/or pipelines facilities is also desirable, including familiarity with relevant industry standards including API 650 and NFPA 30.

Typical projects will include, but are not limited to, greenfield, brownfield and heavy retrofit and may be executed under a variety of contracts including design-bid-build, Engineer-Procure, or EPC.

Most projects will require interaction with clients, acting as their trusted technical engineering and construction advisor, in development of safe, creative and cost-effective solutions.

Job Duties/Responsibilities -

  • Under general supervision, direct and coordinate the civil engineering and design staff from multiple offices for a project, incorporating schedules, budgets and project criteria into design and deliverables to meet project goals.

  • Organize/plan projects, prepare/maintain schedules, develop/monitor budgets and manpower forecasts, develop/monitor material estimates, and assign project work activities.

  • Consult with project staff and clients to obtain information relative to project criteria.

  • Coordinate with permitting agencies and public utilities and clients in the Oil, Gas and Chemical Industry.

  • Work with project management/client/procurement/construction for development and support of material procurement, permit, subcontract and construction activities.

  • Select, recommend and prepare project deliverables; includes FEP phase design concepts through detailed design, procurement and construction.

  • Plan and lead preparation of a full range of contract documents including problem analysis, reports, model development, drawing extraction, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Perform and Check a variety of civil designs and calculations including hydraulics and hydrology, paving and grading, roads, rail, erosion control, ponds, containment areas, and underground utilities. Select, recommend and prepare project deliverables, includes FEP phase design concepts through detailed design.

  • Exhibit thorough understanding of pertinent codes, governing regulations and industry practices, etc.

  • Conduct site visits, field investigations and answer RFI’s and NCR’s.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and motivate others with regards to continuous improvement.

  • Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence, layout and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Produce designs that are practical and constructible, applying sound civil engineering principles and judgement to design.

  • Participate in site visits, walk down work areas with other disciplines, prepare field notes and sketches, and incorporate information gathered into final design.

  • Develop material and effectively train, mentor, and develop new engineers.

  • Participate in model reviews, marketing and possible client development meetings.

  • Facilitate and perform civil quality reviews for work completed by multiple offices. This includes back checking models/drawings, clash detection in Navisworks, and inter-discipline team reviews.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 7 years related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience). Field experience is highly desirable.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Advanced understanding, proficiency and mastery of software including Microstation, InRoads, AutoTurn, Navis Works and Smart Plant Review, StormCad and other Hydraulics and Hydrology Software.

  • Knowledge and proficiency utilizing laser scan data, including use of LFM software.

  • Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of civil discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of skillfully operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers, Detailers, Designers and other offices) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate to accomplish objectives.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and extreme attention to detail.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication, teamwork and interdisciplinary coordination skills.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Must be flexible and willing to learn new skills as required to support projects.

  • Must be able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and have excellent time management skills.
