Burns & McDonnell Staff Mechanical Engineer - Oil, Gas & Chemical (Houston) in Houston, Texas

Description

The Burns & McDonnell's Oil Gas Chemical Global Practice in Houston, TX is hiring a Staff Mechanical Engineer to support projects in a variety of industry sectors, including the strategic areas of renewable fuels and carbon capture/reduction.

  • Primary responsibilities include the application, design (thermal and mechanical), specification, bid and purchase of fired heaters, steam boilers, incinerators, thermal oxidizers, flare systems and other similar fired equipment/packaged systems.

  • Prepare technical specifications, requisitions, technical bid evaluation, vendor drawing review, act as a responsible engineer through project closeout.

  • Drive the interface with multiple disciplines and client to meet project design requirements.

  • Demonstrate an interest in supporting the installation and troubleshooting fired equipment and auxiliary systems (e.x. Burner Management Systems), and be willing to provide pre-commissioning & start-up support as required. Plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, and may involve a variety of complex features.

  • Responsible for supplier coordination, and coordination with inspectors.

  • Reviews and approves design drawings, vendor data and documentation and associated workflow management. Participates in PHA’s, and reviews of PFDs , P&IDs.

  • Participates in preparation of design guides, guide specifications and support proposals.

  • Monitors subcontracted technical services activities.

  • Provides input to estimates, proposals, scheduling, manpower planning, etc.

  • Conducts field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information

  • May coordinate departmental and divisional project studies and report preparation assignments.

  • Organize & attend FAT’s, develop installation work packages.

  • Mentoring provided by senior personnel

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering may be substituted for 1 year experience.

  • 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.

  • Successful completion (i.e. passing) FE or EIT preferred.

  • Candidate must be interested in a career in fired equipment and similar packaged systems.

  • This position requires a competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such API-520/530/536/538/556/560/673, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes, and NFPA-85, PIP.

  • Prior fired equipment or packaged systems/operations or maintenance/reliability experience is considered a plus.

  • Travel<25% (Must be willing to take occasional field assignments that may last 2 to 4 months)
