Burns & McDonnell Analysis Section Manager in Kansas City, Missouri
The Analysis Section Manager is responsible for the direction and leadership of the Analysis Section of the Utility Consulting Department within the Business & Technology Solutions Global Practice.Candidates should have a broad base of knowledge regarding analysis services for the utility industry.Areas of responsibility include general roles supporting the overall Utility Consulting Department and specific roles relative to the Analysis Section including the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management.
The Analysis Section Manager will supervise a team of Consultants focused on analysis studies for utility clients.The Consultants in this group will be supporting projects involving power generation development, asset acquisition due diligence, plant decommissioning studies, renewable generation development, financial studies, utility cost of service, and planning for capital asset spending.The Analysis Section Manager will be expected to communicate with Project Managers and other members of management to facilitate staffing of projects and allocation of workload.They will also be expected to provide training, guidance, and support to all members of the Analysis Section to improve onboarding, professional development of staff, and support growth of the team.
Work with the Department Manager, Assistant Department Manager, and Business Line Leads to establish annual goals for all personnel in the Analysis Section, and follow-up throughout the year with each team member on progress toward those goals.Those goals will be incorporated in year-end performance reviews.
Mentor personnel in the Analysis Section on career path opportunities and support their growth into career paths that best fit their individual skill sets
Support the development and implementation of Utility Consulting Department initiatives, policies, and processes
Responsible for ensuring Analysis Section personnel follow department, global practice, and company policies and procedures
Responsible for the recruitment, development, training, and retention of Analysis Section personnel
Responsible for onboarding of new personnel, including working with Department Manager and Assistant Department Manager to develop and implement an onboarding process. This will include coordination of training on department tools and processes as well as general industry training
Responsible for working with Department Manager, Assistant Department Manager, Business Line Leads, and Project Managers to develop training curriculum classes to provide for growth and development of individuals within the Analysis Section. This will include general industry knowledge training, as well as training on specific software and tools used on projects in the department + Responsible for working with the Assistant Department Manager, other Section Managers, Project Managers, and Managers in Regional Offices on resource allocation of Analysis Section personnel to facilitate workload on projects and maintain high billability of Analysis Section personnel
Organize and lead section meetings as appropriate
Coordinate with other Utility Consulting Section Managers, the Department Manager, and the Assistant Department Manager on strategic issues relating to the Department
Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving problems
Recommend changes in the Analysis Section and/or the Utility Consulting Department to achieve the objectives assigned to them
Market global practice, Department and Section capabilities with higher focus on technical development functions and efficiency improvement projects to serve our clients, increase staff skills, and maintain billable goals
Advance and develop Department tools and work flows to increase efficiency of project execution
Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Analysis Section personnel
Provide support to Project Managers for staffing and execution approach on projects including assigning staff to specific projects
Work with Project Managers to monitor progress on Utility Consulting projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality
Serve as Project Manager, Technical Consultant, or other support on Utility Consulting projects to maintain an individual billable time of 50%
Monitor and maintain staffing levels, staffing loading, and staffing assignments to meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals
Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Interns assigned to the Analysis Section including assignment of work, training, and other associated functions
All other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in engineering or business from accredited program, advanced degree is a plus (MS or MBA). Minimum 7 years related professional experience in engineering consulting and/or project management with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the utility industry.
Experience should include consulting experience related to technical analysis or strategic planning projects in the utility industry. Must have a strong understanding of the utility industry.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients. Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
Must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts in regards to utility planning studies
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines
