Burns & McDonnell Assistant Civil Engineer - Traffic (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

As an Assistant Civil Engineer in our Traffic group, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer (PE) and Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) to assist multidisciplinary project teams to create world class designs for public and private clients on a variety of transportation and development projects.

Our traffic engineers assist our transportation teams through each phase of the project development lifecycle (feasibility study, Schematic & Environmental, Plans, Specification and Estimates. Projects range in type and scale from City/County arterial widenings, innovative intersection designs and traffic impact assessments to billion-dollar multi-level freeway designs, intelligent transportation system architecture, and railway designs.

Opportunities as an Assistant Civil Engineer in the Traffic Services department include:

  • Working with a close-knit team of multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.

  • Corresponding and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.

  • Developing traffic operations and safety studies, microsimulation traffic models, traffic impact analyses, and highway capacity analyses.

  • Developing traffic phasing for traffic control plans.

  • Developing skills in software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, HCS, Synchro, PTV Vissim, & OpenRoads.

  • Designing traffic control infrastructure (such as signing, striping, lighting, and traffic signal plans).

  • Analyzing crash data to identify patterns and develop safety improvement strategies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Masters of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. 

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred. 

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred. 

  • Involvement on campus or in the community. 

  • Basic knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques, principles and procedures.   

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Basic computer skills and understanding of civil and traffic analysis programs (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenRoads, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, HCS, Synchro, PTV Vissim, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD),

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
