Burns & McDonnell Assistant Utility Planning Specialist in Kansas City, Missouri


The Assistant Utility Planning Specialist assists with research and analysis on economic data trends and provides information on findings. This position performs tasks requiring application of standard mathematical analysis in support of studies projects.

  • Assist with economic and technical analysis for generation resource planning involving power plant projects including conventional fossil fuel and renewable resources.

  • Assist in performing utility integrated resource planning studies for future power plant expansion, power plant retirement, and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist in developing resource planning models and perform economic analysis using a variety of computer based software.

  • Assist project managers, engineers and analysts to develop and incorporate technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.

  • Assist with developing reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis.

  • Assist with organizing data into report format and arrange graphic illustrations of research findings.

  • Assist with interpreting economic conditions and business implications.

  • Assists with preparing economic feasibility studies.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Economics from an accredited program or similar degree.

  • Basic knowledge of economic application software.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.
