Burns & McDonnell Aviation Security Senior Engineer / Project Manager in Kansas City, Missouri

Burns & McDonnell is looking for a unique Lead Senior Engineer/Aviation Security Project Manager that has a desire to apply their technical design experience, while actively engaging their entrepreneurial spirit. This is a seller/doer position responsible for securing, planning, designing, implementing and testing airport security projects. The job requires that some time is spent selling Burns & McDonnell services to airport and airline customers as well as managing a portion of those projects. You will represent the company by calling on clients, attending trade events, authoring articles for publication and presenting company capabilities in both small and large venues. You will evaluate requests for qualifications or proposals from potential clients and manage the preparation of those proposals and presentations.

As a senior engineer or project manager, you will also be expected to become familiar with the company design and engineering resources and deploy those resources as necessary to meet project scope and client needs. You must manage project budget and schedule using the company’s Project Performance System, and report results monthly.

Direct and coordinate activities of several disciplines on a project of moderate scope or a combination of smaller projects. Communicate and coordinate with team all deliverables as well as scope, schedule and budget. Direct coordination with clients and other external clients. May initiate or assist in contract negotiations or preparation. Assist in direction of project planning, budgeting and establishing critical project objectives. Other duties as assigned.


Applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or business from an accredited program, with 10 years’ total experience that includes at least 5 years’ experience in airport security, operations or management, working at an airport or A&E firm. Excellent planning and written/verbal communications skills are mandatory.

Have a solid understanding of TSA and FAA security guidelines for airfield security, passenger and baggage screening and airline cargo screening. Must have current knowledge and experience of hardware and software systems for baggage inspection, cargo inspection, access control and CCTV surveillance as well as NIST and other relevant standards. Understand airport capital funding methodologies and FAA criteria for program funding.

The successful applicant will have existing relationships in the airport and airline industry and a track record of delivering creative and successful results.

PMP, PSP, AAAE, and/or Professional Engineer certifications are a plus.
