Burns & McDonnell Electrical Department Manager - Power (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

The Power Global Practice is seeking to hire an Electrical Department Manager at it's World Headquarters in Kansas City, MO. This position is responsible for the leadership and managerial direction of the Electrical Department of the Power (PWR) Global Practice. The Electrical Department Manager will lead the team to engage in all forms of power generation projects including new solar, storage, hydro, gas and heavy industrial facilities along with electrical upgrades to existing facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies of Electrical Department personnel.

  • Serve as a business leader of the electrical business to support all PWR business lines.

  • Maintain direct and frequent coordination with business line Engineering Managers and Directors to ensure Department alignment with the objectives of the respective business line.

  • Coordinating with other PWR Electrical Department/Section managers in interpreting policies, procedures, and technical direction to maintain consistency across all offices.

  • Coordinating with other PWR Electrical Department/Section managers on staffing and maintaining Global Practice billability targets across offices.

  • Identification and evaluation of project Lead Engineers.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines leads and Department Management to optimize project execution.

  • Coordinating Department objectives and requirements as well as organizing projects and initiatives.

  • Build relationships and confidence of Project Managers as internal Electrical Department clients.

  • Build relationships and coordinate with Department/Section Managers in other global practices and office locations.

  • Providing administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Electrical Department personnel.

  • Organizing and leading Department meetings.

  • Assigning work, forecasting, and reviewing performance to maximize efficiency and cost-effective utilization of staff while also promoting design excellence.

  • Providing guidance to Lead Engineers relative to set-up and structure of staffing and execution approach on projects with a higher related emphasis on the electrical related functions and the associated interfaces with other disciplines.

  • Monitoring and maintaining staffing levels to meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.

  • Promote and advance cost effective BMI utilization.

  • Serve as an advisor; provides input and evaluation on designs, procurement strategies, acceptable equipment suppliers, proposals, and project execution.

  • Monitoring electrical department progress on projects and providing input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets (engineering labor and equipment/construction), and quality.

  • Providing guidance including implementation of workflows, standards, and tools to Lead Engineers including associated training.

  • Attending project meetings when requested by the Global Practice.

  • Develop, promote and administer best practices for constructability and construction deliverables for the efficient execution of construction projects. Travel to and coordination with AZCO, BMcD Constructors, and active construction sites is required.

  • Facilitate identification of goals, objectives, and deliverables within established consistent framework from team to team.

  • Understand and communicate costs and cost driving initiatives, specifically for EPC projects as related to installation, procurement, productivity, and total installed cost.

  • Participate and facilitate in Department design non-conformance correct action process, assess effectiveness of corrective actions, and propose alternatives, if necessary.

  • Drive a culture of quality and continual improvement.

  • Recruiting, development, training, performance reviews/appraisals and retention of staff.

  • Serving as the technical advisor, providing leadership-level input and evaluation of electrical designs, equipment specifications, electrical upgrades and studies.

  • Demonstrating creativity, foresight and sound judgment in anticipating and solving both technical and personnel issues.

  • Encouraging usage of Department tools, processes and workflows to increase efficiency in designs, standardization across offices, specification development, and project execution.

  • Marketing power plant electrical upgrade projects to serve our clients, increase staff skills, and maintain billable goals, including proposal development and client presentations.

  • Assisting with and leading proposal efforts for electrical related projects and supporting electrical design functions on other proposals.

  • Establishing and reviewing electrical budgets and schedules for proposals.

  • Setting quality review assignments and performing quality reviews.

  • Performing project management responsibilities for small studies and projects. Assisting staff with project setup, coordinating with the client/team, handling billing/invoicing, change orders, project closeout, etc.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field. Minimum 7 years related professional experience.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer preferred.

  • Demonstrated technical ability internally and externally preferred.

  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferred.

  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact preferred.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

  • Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.

  • Proven collaboration, facilitation, and organization problem solving skills in previous roles preferred.
