Burns & McDonnell IT Project Management & Portfolio Office Analyst Intern - Corporate IT (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


Burns & McDonnell's IT Project Office has an exciting opportunity for a Project Management Analyst Intern. The position will be in our World HQ in Kansas City, MO. The internship experience in the Project Office is designed to partner with students by creating a stimulating learning experience through working on real projects that support our Corporate Services (COR) and Global Practices.

As an intern of the IT Project and Portfolio Office, the core of this experience is about sharing with you the skills and core competencies that support Portfolio, Project, and Resource Managers to apply best practices for Portfolio and Project Management processes and tools.

In addition, you would help provide status reporting support to the Project Office to help us deliver efficiency and standardization to our internal customers.

Responsible for supporting a standard set of best practices, principles, reports, and templates for Portfolio, Project Management, and Hybrid team.

Provide critical support with project artifacts, meeting minutes, decision registers, report consolidation, monitoring and control. In addition, support and/or drive PO initiatives and attend to governance, standards, and quality expectations queries.

This role will require significant interaction and collaboration with Project Managers, Technology Business Partners, and Senior IT Leaders.

Adherence to processes and appropriate governance, including developing technical tools that contribute to the suite of metrics that support our projects and portfolios, Projects, Capacity Reports, Metrics, Dashboards, and ad hoc reports. A Summer with us should provide an excellent grounding and experience with the standards and practices of a busy Project Office.

  • Assist with tasks that may include scheduling and supporting project-specific project meetings and their deliverables.

  • Create ad hoc PowerPoint presentations in support of project status and executive updates.

  • Provide key technology and reporting support to PMs in support of individual project delivery.

  • Responsible for supporting a common set of best practices, principles, reports, and templates for Portfolio, Project Management teams.

  • Supporting the IT Project Office Managers with duties related to ad hoc reporting, analysis, or Portfolio related activity.

  • Other duties as may be assigned by a PM or Project Office Manager .


  • Currently enrolled and in good standing in post-secondary education and/or technical certificate program in a field related to IT, Marketing, Change Management, Project management, or Organizational Psychology may be natural fits in the department; however, we are open to discussing with other majors.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA is strongly preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as an international company Bi-Lingual a plus

  • An interest in the Project Management Arts & Sciences.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Some interest in project management tools such as MS Project, Monday.com or other academic/personal planning tools.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work, without restrictions or need for work sponsorship, in the country where this position is located for the internship duration.
