Burns & McDonnell Mechanical Engineering Intern - Utility Consulting (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri
A Mechanical Engineering Intern in the 1898 & Co. group, Utility Consulting department will perform project work that includes developing solutions to technical challenges encountered by our utility clients. Mechanical Engineering Interns will utilize engineering knowledge to drive sound business strategies and work with the project team through engineering studies and evaluations. Other duties listed below:
Assists in the mechanical and electrical engineering design of utility planning projects through the conceptual phase.
Assists with modifying and reviewing engineering drawings for a variety of projects including, but not limited to: power plants, process facilities and industrial facilities.
Applies basic knowledge of commonly used mechanical and electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the engineering services industry.
Assists in performing field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
Assists with research and applies project related data as required by the project managers.
Assist with engineering, financial, and technical analysis for various engineering projects including power generation, power delivery, and other utilities.
Assist in developing and performing detailed financial analysis using a variety of computer-based software.
Assist project managers, engineers and technical analysts to develop and incorporate technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.
Assist with developing technical reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis.
Assist with organizing data into report format and arrange graphic illustrations of research findings. Assist with interpreting financial and economic conditions and subsequent business implications to client projects
Assists with client presentations, design review, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design of utility systems for various industries and markets.
Assist with power system planning and operations analysis including: power flow, transient, stability, reliability and economic dispatch.
Assist with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and regional requirement assessments.
Assist with technical and business related risk assessments.
Apply basic mechanical electrical engineering theory and principles to complete assigned tasks on planning, analysis, and other projects.
Perform various study analyses utilizing power system software.
Participate in internal and/or external electric utility industry conferences.
Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.
All other duties as assigned.
Pursuit of Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Currently enrolled, and in good standing, in a post-secondary education program in a field related to the work done in the department.
Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
