Burns & McDonnell Power Applications Design Developer - 1898 & Co. (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join the Enterprise Systems Business Line within the Technology Consulting Practice of 1898 & Co. We seek a qualified Software Engineer practitioner to provide application/technology design and build solutions and services to our clients. The selected candidate will join the Global Enterprise Systems Business Line, which focuses on providing our clients a variety of consulting services, offerings, capabilities, and strategies to deliver high value to our clients through various leading technologies and practice disciplines. The Software Engineer shall possess strong technical knowledge of multiple technologies to support our client’s needs. The candidate must have proven experience in designing and implementing enterprise applications using Microsoft Power Platform. This experience includes the design, development testing, and deploying enterprise applications using Power Platform. The candidate must also possess project execution capabilities, strong leadership and collaboration capabilities, excellent communication skills that focus on continuous improvement and enterprise innovation.

This individual contributor position will work as a team member to execute various technology development activities on system implementation projects for 1898 & Co.’s clients. The position will design, develop, test, and implement solutions for our clients with a strong emphasis on teamwork, customer commitment, industry best practices, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities:

  • Apply industry experience and best practices to design, develop, and implement custom and packaged software solutions to support complex business requirements.

  • Apply knowledge and expertise of current and emerging software development technologies to develop and deliver quality Enterprise solutions in both Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) domains to meet client objectives.

  • Serve as Enterprise Systems Design and Development expert on projects executed for Electric Transmission/Distribution/Generation/Telecom, Municipal Government, Federal Government, Airport and Facilities industries.

  • Create/Develop customer-facing applications for the insurance industry using low-code/no-code. Co-create scalable web applications and workflows with other engineers and business stakeholders through active participation in an agile development process, using mainly low-code platforms, including Microsoft Power Apps.

  • Collaborate with technical colleagues to identify best fit solution options to solve technical challenges.

  • Perform systems analysis, design, programming, testing, debugging, and documentation to ensure the developed solution meets our clients’ expectations.

  • Meet and work with Burns & McDonnell’s business analysts and clients to translate business requirements into Enterprise Integration solutions and services.

  • Lead and assist with the preparation of Enterprise Integration Solution Project documentation, including but not limited to; development of functional and technical specifications, technical approach, testing specifications, and implementing technical solutions into an execution environment.

  • Actively participate on industry technical committees and professional organizations to promote and expand Burns & McDonnell’s capabilities, experience, and solutions by highlighting our thought leadership.

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance and leadership to Jr. staff members.

  • Review other designers and developer’s documentation for standards and best practice principles

  • Use software product experience and knowledge to provide input and influence project execution processes and quality assurance/quality control protocols.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field is preferred; Equivalent work experience will be substituted.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience providing Enterprise Software Solutions leveraging various technical platforms.

  • Excellent Enterprise Technology Software Engineering, data analytics, cloud, and related skills.

  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time full-stack development, preferably outside of low-code platform preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of developing applications using Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server. PostgreSQL and other relational DB platforms preferred

  • Minimum of 2 years of full-time Low-code development experience with Power Platform preferred

  • Experience with medium to large IT projects using industry-leading software platforms.

  • Strong ability to design, develop, test, and implement enterprise solutions.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading application development teams to develop and implement leading-edge technology solutions.

  • Experience with a variety of project execution methodologies, including but not limed to Waterfall and Agile.

  • Experience in integrating operational systems in Electric Transmission/Distribution/ Generation/Telecom (SCADA, ADMS), Municipal Government, Federal Government, Airport and Facilities industries is preferred.

  • Travel: 30-60%
