Burns & McDonnell Remediation Section Manager - Environmental Services (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of a Section in the Remediation Department in Kansas City within the Environmental Services (ENS) Global Practice. Areas of responsibility include Business Development, Project Management and general roles supporting the overall Remediation Department and specific roles relative to the Section including the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management. Candidate will be expected to maintain a billable workload, including project management and technical project work, while fulfilling management duties.


  • Outstanding safety record on projects and proven attention to safety.

Business Development

  • Successful private and government marketing efforts including development of clients and programs.

  • Assist with and lead proposal efforts private and government.

  • Support and assist in the development of a department Business Plan including development of forward-looking sales and growth strategies.

  • Establish or review budgets and schedules for remediation-related proposals.

  • Manage and grow key remediation accounts.

Project Management

  • Candidate must have the ability to successfully manage all aspects of environmental projects within the ENS Global Practice including understanding of key performance indicators (KPIs) and project management tools.

  • Candidate must have experience with project management for a wide variety of client types (private commercial/industrial and state and federal government).

  • Assist remediation section staff with project setup in MIS, client/team coordination, billing/invoicing, change management, project closeout, etc.

  • Advance and develop department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of project execution.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Demonstrate strong commitment to quality and client service.

Personnel/Administrative Duties

  • Monitor and maintain staffing levels, workload, and assignments to meet project requirements while maintaining utilization (UTE) goals for the Section.

  • Guide and direct professional development and assist staff in developing and achieving career goals involving technical, project management, and business development skill sets.

  • Set quality review assignments and perform quality reviews for remediation-related projects.

  • Assign work and review section staff performance to ensure quality and efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Remediation Section personnel.

  • Monitor progress on remediation-related projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.

  • Serve as the technical advisor and provide senior-level input and evaluation of project development activities.

  • Manage recruitment, career path development, training, mentoring, and retention of Remediation Section personnel.

  • Other duties, as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in environmental related sciences, geology, or other engineering discipline from accredited program.

  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience in environmental industry and/or project management.

  • Experience must include experience related project scope definition and cost estimating of environmental related projects.

  • Must have a strong understanding of environmental industry standards and regulatory requirements related to the environmental industry.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Position requires 20-50% travel.

  • Office hours must be reflective of personnel within the Section.
