Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned company with a 125-year water/wastewater business history. Our Kansas City office is looking for a talented employee-owner to serve as a Senior Civil Engineer/Project Manager to support our Water/Wastewater Systems (Linear Pipelines) Department.

The Senior Civil Engineer will lead water line and sewer line planning and design project teams to deliver world-class plans and designs for new construction or rehabilitating or replacing existing infrastructure. The Senior Civil Engineer will lead the project team throughout the proposal, design, and construction process, adapting plans and designs according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. The Senior Civil Engineer will coordinate with the design team for a combination of small and large projects and provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members. In addition, they will meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel to drive progress and deliver projects. As required, the Senior Civil Engineer will also assist with marketing and sales responsibilities. Other duties, as assigned, include:

  • Lead water and sewer pipeline design from the conceptual phase through design completion for project. Design would include sanitary and combined sewers, pump stations, sewer and manhole rehabilitation, hydraulic calculations, alignment selection, utility coordination, easement requirements, permit coordination, cost estimating support, and trenchless design methods.

  • Review and Provide Construction Phase Services: construction specifications and data sheets, technical bid summaries, shop drawings, and interface with other engineering disciplines, detailers, designers. Responsible for effective management of construction phase services including work change directives and change orders and coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of materials.

  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify, lead and manage key pursuits.

  • Participate in the development of project schedule, scope, budget, and client contract negotiations. Work with staff managers to plan project team resources for the delivery of projects.

  • Applies expert knowledge of commonly used civil concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the water engineering services industry. Compiles studies and reports. Writes specifications and contributes to construction project manual development.

  • Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects and develops non-standard design solutions.

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Manage project task and project budgets and report project performance.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the water/wastewater practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program (water or civil curriculum focus preferred)

  • Minimum 7 years of civil engineering experience (8-10 years preferred); including design and construction administration of water/wastewater systems.

  • Strong technical capabilities with the development of contract documents including a thorough understanding of all engineering concepts related to water transmission mains, water distribution systems, and wastewater collection systems design and construction.

  • Professional Engineering License (PE) expected to be obtained within 6 months of hire.

  • The successful candidate must be capable of executing all phases of projects including planning, preparation of specifications & drawings, construction administration and field observation.

  • Knowledge in standard engineering design techniques and procedures.

  • Strong computer skills and/or water hydraulics civil analysis programs.

  • Strong project engineering history with a proven record of building client relationships.

  • Experience with permitting of waterlines and sewer lines through local, state, and federal regulators.

  • Trenchless and/or tunneling experience is a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Strong commitment to working in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail and quality control procedures.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
