Burns & McDonnell Senior Geologist - Remediation (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

The Senior Geologist will lead environmental remedial investigation and stratigraphy projects throughout their life cycle, adapting plans according to budget constraints, design factors and/or client needs. The successful candidate should have a strong technical background in geology (stratigraphy, geomorphology, and/or sedimentology) as well as significant remediation investigation, consulting and project execution experience. The work required includes integration of complex, multigenerational, spatial and analytical data sets to develop and communicate the holistic conceptual site models that guide current and future groundwater remediation.

  • Conduct research and analysis of the regional geology and depositional environments related to a project site. This includes identifying appropriate facies models that represent subsurface conditions.

  • Apply Environmental Sequence Stratigraphic (ESS) methodology to complex data sets consisting of lithologic borings, down hole, and surficial geophysical data (including but not limited to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Gamma and e-logs, Electrical Conductivity/Hydraulic Profiling Tool, Seismic, and ground penetrating radar).

  • Work with project hydrogeologist to evaluate potentiometric data, define hydrostratigraphic units, and understand implications for contaminant fate and transport

  • Plan and develop appropriate stratigraphic cross section profiles including evaluation of individual boring logs and application of graphic grainsize logs (GSLs) coding.

  • Perform stratigraphic interpretation of subsurface: Integrate the knowledge of regional geology, depositional environments, and facies models to make geologically-sound interpretations and correlations between data points.

  • Create and communicate geologically based conceptual site models using a variety of hard copy and digital platforms

  • Assess soil and groundwater data, identify data gaps and develop appropriate soil and groundwater sampling plans, data compilation for soil, air and groundwater analytical results.

  • Conduct proposal and report writing for environmental based projects

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Apply expert knowledge of commonly used environmental concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the environmental consulting services industry.

  • Apply knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard solutions.

  • Lead preparation of work plans, investigation reports, feasibility studies, remedial design, and implementation.

  • Participate in the development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning, and construction planning.

  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the environmental engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced Geoscientists.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other environmental and engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or related Environmental degree from an ABET accredited program is required.

  • Masters of Science in Geology with an emphasis in a stratigraphic discipline is preferred

  • Minimum 7 years environmental consulting experience (preferably 10 years).

  • Professional Geologist (PG) license preferred.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite). Some knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Rockworks, Leap Frog, Openground, ArcGIS, and other geoscience software is essential

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (and annual updates) is required.

  • Basic knowledge of OSHA, CERCLA and remedial design

  • Experience with Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments and/or site investigations, collecting soil and groundwater samples, logging soil borings, installing and developing monitoring wells, data analysis is a plus.

  • Experience with and working knowledge of State and/or Federal regulations desired.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for environmental reports and deliverables.

  • Ability to travel (potentially 20%).
