Burns & McDonnell Senior Solution Architect - Engineering Technology (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

Burns & McDonnell Project Delivery is seeking a Solution Architect with heavy industrial design and construction experience to provide application/technology solutions for our internal business lines.  The selected candidate will join the Engineering Technology Team, which is focused on providing the necessary leadership, analysis, strategies, and technology to ensure that engineering solutions meet business needs and align with enterprise governance, standards, and security.

This position will develop and execute solution-related initiatives for various Burns & McDonnell business lines. The position will lead efforts to identify and deliver solutions to our business lines with a strong emphasis on teamwork, commitment, industry best practices, and continuous improvement.

The Solutions Architect proactively and holistically leads and supports activities that guide developing and managing a portfolio of solutions that include platforms, applications, technologies, processes, and data.

The Solution Architect shall possess application and technology knowledge, data and design methodologies, and general technical skills to implement core solutions within our business lines. They must have strong project execution capabilities, leadership and collaboration capabilities, excellent communication skills, focus on continuous improvement and enterprise innovation, and have strong attention to detail, delivering high-quality work. The Solution Architect is responsible for providing strategic guidance, system and technology assessments, system road maps, research, planning, and industry best practices for our business line leaders to make investment decisions that align with the organization's long-term vision.

The Solutions Architect must understand the concepts and importance of business goals, objectives, outcomes, capabilities, and processes. The solutions architect provides the necessary leadership to support the development of technology solutions and ensure that those solutions meet business needs and align with industry governance and standards. They create deliverables for managing the organization's portfolio of "to be" and "as is" solutions that enable and drive business outcomes.

The Solutions Architect will demonstrate competencies across four key dimensions:  

Understand Business Needs

Translate business and technical requirements into an architectural blueprint to achieve business objectives.

Understand business drivers and capabilities (future and current state) and determine corresponding enterprise solution design and requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.

Provide Enterprise Guidance

Provide deliverables like standard definitions, architecture designs and work processes.

Assess the impact of new and existing technology investments on the business.

Coordinate with internal IT to align solutions with enterprise data governance, resiliency, and risk analysis.

Assess Technology

Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify opportunities to improve or replace deficient technologies or solutions misaligned with business requirements.

Understand emerging or disruptive technology and recognize opportunities for practical application to enable new and evolving business lines and operating models.

Analyze the technology industry, competitors, and market trends, to determine potential implications for a given solution.

Analyze the business environment to detect critical deficiencies, legacy systems, or technical debt and recommend solutions for improvement.

Apply Technology

Lead evaluation, design, and analysis for solutions across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, business requirements and enterprise standards  

Consultant on various technologies, platforms, and vendor offerings to identify solutions that achieve targeted business outcomes.

Guide solution architecture design

Able to create, validate, document, and optimize solution requirements.

Develop, test, and lead the implementation of core solutions.

Assist business lines in defining and optimizing engineering work processes.

Able to conduct technology assessments and create technology roadmaps that address key business and technology drivers.

Apply industry experience and best practices to design, and implement enterprise solutions to satisfy complex business requirements.

Apply knowledge and expertise of technology frameworks, integration frameworks, and data management practices to develop and deliver quality Enterprise solutions that meet enterprise objectives.

Actively participate in related technical committees and professional organizations to promote Burns & McDonnell’s capabilities and experience as a leader in our industries.

Ability to lead high-level discussions and strategy reviews focusing on utilizing public and private cloud services to gain technical advantages that are otherwise out of reach.

Write and present strategies, technical papers, white papers, and business plans.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, MIS, CAD, or closely related field, equivalent work experience will be substituted.

Minimum of 8 years of relevant technology experience.

Experience providing strategies, enterprise integrations, and services leveraging various applications and technical platforms.

Experience with relevant industry tools / platforms, standards, and best practices.

Excellent enterprise solution and integration skills, including data architecture, integration architecture, and other architectural methods and practices.

Have led or participated in a minimum of 3 large-scale enterprise transformation projects using industry enterprise strategy solutions.

Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience with industry specific technology platforms and technologies.

Strong ability to ascertain customer concerns, consider alternatives and provide customers guidance to solve their questions.

Ability to interact with customers in a professional manner that enhances the customers’ experience and increases productivity.

Strong organizational and prioritization skills to interact with multiple customers with differing needs.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

 Preferred:

Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations.

Ability to translate future-state business capabilities and requirements into solution architecture requirements.

Technology neutral: remains unbiased toward any specific technology or vendor and is more interested in results than personal preferences.

Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms, and environments.

Experience delivering presentations to senior-level executives and managers.

Knowledge of various backend development languages like Java and Python.

Knowledge of various database technologies like SQL and MongoDB.

Knowledge of various frontend web development languages like JavaScript and HTML.

Excellent understanding of application development methodologies and infrastructure and network architecture.

Organizationally savvy, with the ability to navigate organizational politics.
