Burns & McDonnell Senior Solution Architect - Heavy Industrial Engineering Technology (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


Burns & McDonnell’s Project Delivery Team is seeking a Solution Architect with heavy industrial design and construction experience to provide solutions for our internal business lines.  The selected candidate will join the team focused on providing leadership, analysis, strategies, and technology to ensure that engineering solutions meet business needs and align with enterprise governance, standards, and security.

Responsibilities :

  • Develop and execute a variety of solution-related initiatives for various business lines.

  • Lead efforts to identify and deliver solutions to our business lines with a strong emphasis on teamwork, commitment, industry best practices, and continuous improvement.

  • Proactively and holistically lead activities that guide the development and management of a solution portfolio that includes platforms, applications, technologies, processes, and data.

The Solutions Architect will demonstrate key competencies:

Provide Enterprise Guidance

  • Provide deliverables like standard definitions, architecture designs and work processes.

  • Assess the impact of new and existing technology investment on the business.

  • Coordinate with internal IT to align solutions with enterprise data governance, resiliency, and risk analysis.

  • Responsible for providing strategic guidance, system and technology assessments, system road maps, research, planning, and industry best practices for our business line leaders to make investment decisions that align with the long-term vision of the organization.

  • Provide the necessary leadership to support the development of technology solutions and ensure that those solutions meet business needs and align with industry governance and standards.

  • Create deliverables for managing the organization's portfolio of "to be" and "as is" solutions that enable and drive business outcomes.

Understand Business Needs

  • Translate business and technical requirements into an architectural blueprint to achieve business objectives.

  • Understand business drivers and capabilities (future and current state) and determine corresponding enterprise solution design and requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.

  • Application and technology knowledge, data and design methodologies, and general technical skills to implement core solutions with our business lines.

  • Understand the concepts and importance of business goals, objectives, outcomes, capabilities, and processes.

Assess and Apply Technology

  • Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify opportunities to improve or replace deficient technologies, or solutions misaligned with business requirements.

  • Understand emerging or disruptive technology and recognize opportunity for practical application to enable new and evolving business lines and operating models.

  • Analyze the technology industry, competitors, and market trends, to determines potential implications for a given solution.

  • Analyze the business environment to detect critical deficiencies, legacy systems, or technical debt, and recommend solutions for improvement.

  • Lead evaluation, design, and analysis for solutions across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, business requirements and enterprise standards.

  • Consultant on a broad range of technologies, platforms, and vendor offerings to identify solutions that achieve targeted business outcomes.

Provide guidance on solution architecture design

  • Able to create, validate, document, and optimize solution requirements.

  • Develop, test, and lead the implementation of core solutions.

  • Assist business lines in defining and optimizing engineering work processes.

  • Able to conduct technology assessments and create technology roadmaps that address key business and technology drivers.

  • Apply industry experience and best practices to design, and implement, enterprise solutions to satisfy complex business requirements.

  • Apply knowledge and expertise of technology frameworks, integration frameworks, and data management practices to develop and deliver quality Enterprise solutions that meet enterprise objectives.

  • Actively participate in related technical committees and professional organizations to promote Burns & McDonnell’s capabilities and experience, as a leader in our industries.

  • Ability to lead high-level discussions and strategy reviews focusing on utilizing public and private cloud services to gain technical advantages that are otherwise out of reach.

  • Write, and present strategies, technical papers, white papers, and business plans.


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, MIS, CAD, or closely related field, equivalent work experience will be substituted.

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant technology experience.

  • Experience providing strategies, enterprise integrations, and services leveraging various applications and technical platforms.

  • Experience with relevant industry tools / platforms, standards, and best practices.

  • Excellent enterprise solution and integration skills, including data architecture, integration architecture, and other architectural methods and practices.

  • Have led or participated in a minimum of 3 large-scale enterprise transformation projects using industry enterprise strategy solutions.

  • Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with industry specific technology platforms and technologies.

  • Strong ability to ascertain customer concerns, consider alternatives and provide customers guidance to solve their questions.

  • Ability to interact with customers in a professional manner that enhances the customers’ experience and increases productivity.

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills to interact with multiple customers with differing needs.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Preferred :

  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations.

  • Ability to translate future-state business capabilities and requirements into solution architecture requirements.

  • Technology neutral: remains unbiased toward any specific technology or vendor and is more interested in results than personal preferences.

  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms, and environments.

  • Experience delivering presentations to senior-level executives and managers.

  • Organizationally savvy, with the ability to navigate organizational politics.

  • Strong project execution capabilities, strong leadership and collaboration capabilities, a focus on continuous improvement and enterprise innovation, have strong attention to detail, delivering high-quality work.

  • Travel to customer and industry partner facilities to conduct advanced technical sessions. 

  • Effectively communicate product benefits for complex applications.

  • Provide product and application demonstrations both in field and conference room settings

  • Participate in seminars, trade shows, and conferences, representing Burns & McDonnell.

  • Participate in beta testing new products and providing feedback to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong leadership skills including the ability to effectively partner with cross-functional teams, mobilizing people with clear objectives.

  • Strong presentation skills especially to customers and leaders.

  • Act as technical business consultant, and help our partners understand how technology can help deliver results.

  • Maintain contact with internal clients and external vendors for clarification and resolution of issues.

  • Analyze processes and workflows.

  • Research and evaluate software.

  • Configure, test, implement, and upgrade tools to enhance design efficiency, quality, & collaboration.

  • Assist with cost, schedule, and resource estimates for technology solutions.

  • Lead coordination with stakeholders to specify and implement engineering systems.

  • Assist with vendor management and Design and Engineering software inventory maintenance.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of best practices relative to the management, control, administration, and use of the respective applications.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of methodologies and technologies.

  • Work collaboratively with other analysts for knowledge sharing and transparency.

  • Experience with BIM software by Autodesk, Bentley, ESRI, Hexagon or others

  • Working knowledge for interchange of digital data between various CADD and BIM platforms
