Burns & McDonnell Senior Structural Engineer - Industrial Water / Wastewater (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Burns & McDonnell is in search of a Senior Structural Engineer for its growing Water Practice. Founded in 1898, Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned firm. The Senior Structural Engineer will lead project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of industrial and municipal water/wastewater projects. Working in a variety of markets ranging from power, manufacturing, pipeline, aviation, government and military facilities. Typical structures include steel pipe racks, steel supports, concrete foundations, vaults and wet-wells, tanks (filters, aeration basins, clarifiers, etc.), and pump stations. Typical building types to support our projects are masonry, pre-cast concrete, and pre-engineered metal buildings. In addition to design of new structures, condition assessments of existing facilities and recommendations for rehabilitation is expected. The Senior Structural Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting structural plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. 

  • Lead the structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion and/or construction.

  • Performing analysis and design calculations for a variety of materials and conditions including concrete, steel, masonry, and soil/foundations.

  • Review vendor and shop drawings.

  • Lead in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing, and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders.

  • Applies expert knowledge of commonly used structural concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the structural engineering industry.

  • Coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of materials. 

  • Leads field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.   

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Support sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.

  • Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance. 

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the structural engineering team. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with a structural focus.

  • Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus a plus.

  • 7 years structural engineering experience.  EPC project experience preferred.

  • Professional Engineering License (PE).

  • Structural Engineering License (SE) preferred.

  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.  Strong knowledge of structural design codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7, PIP). 

  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Strong computer skills in structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA, AutoCAD, BIM, Revit and Tekla)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews of detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
