Burns & McDonnell Senior Transmission Planning Engineer in Kansas City, Missouri


The Senior Transmission Planning Engineer will provide subject matter expertise in the area of power system studies involving planning and operations. Typical studies could include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, electromagnetic transients, reliability, and economic dispatch, among others.

  • Executes complex assignments requiring the use of advanced transmission planning techniques, resulting in the development of new system plans, equipment and/or technological methods which are compliant to North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) and/or other industry standards and criteria.

  • Assess and document feasibility or soundness of proposed plans.

  • Provide transmission planning solutions and expertise to clients and industry contacts.

  • Responsible for financial success of projects.

  • Lead and execute transmission planning and operational studies projects including power flow, transient stability, short circuit, electromagnetic transients, reliability, and economic dispatch, among others.

  • Develop and evaluate future transmission planning plans for major electrical projects.

  • Interpret and apply necessary NERC, FERC and regional assessments, following established requirements and standards.

  • Lead risk assessment processes and procedures utilizing standard techniques.

  • Lead transmission planning assignments utilizing power system analysis software.

  • Resolve transmission planning technical issues encountered during projects and present solutions to other project team members.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff.

  • Develop training on power system and transmission planning assignments.

  • Quality check technical feasibility or soundness of proposed plans utilizing industry accepted techniques.

  • Participates in marketing efforts for key pursuits.

  • All other duties as assigned.               


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 7 years of applicable experience or Master's in Electrical Engineering with 6 years of applicable experience or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 4 years of applicable experience.

  • Consulting experience required.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignment.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Strong computer skills using industry planning software.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Capable of independently solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT)

  • Professional Engineer strongly preferred.
