Burns & McDonnell Staff Chemical or Process Engineer in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

Burns & McDonnell is considered a leading consultant in the crude oil, gas, chemical, and refined product terminals and hydrocarbon process industry. We have been and are engaged in terminal projects both large and small nationwide. The Terminals and Pipelines department executes projects for major oil companies and other industrial clients, including pipeline terminals and loading/offloading facilities.

Job Duties

  • Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but may involve a variety of complex features.

  • Performs process design calculations and develops deliverables such as hydraulic calculations, equipment sizing, facility layout/arrangement, process simulations, Heat and Material Balances (H&MB), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

  • May coordinate departmental and division project studies and report preparation assignments.

  • This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful candidate would be experienced in the design and construction of crude oil, gas, chemical, or refined product terminals and/or pipelines, potentially including:

  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards including API 610, 650, 653, ASME B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8, NFPA 30, DOT Part 192, and DOT Part 195

  • Familiarity with crude oil liquids, gases, and chemicals

  • Layout design and details for API storage tanks

  • Design of load racks and associated pumping and piping systems

  • Design of additive storage, supply and blending systems

  • Pipeline hydraulic modeling

  • Pipeline booster pumping stations

Bachelor's degree in mechanical or chemical engineering from accredited program. Minimum 3 years related experience in the oil & gas industry (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience). Excellent written & verbal communication skills. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered. Completion of FE exam.

Must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Experience in process simulation software (i.e. Hysys and/or Aspen, HTRI) is preferred. Experience in Compressor Stations, Meter/Regulation Stations, Tank Batteries, Pump Stations, and other Pipeline Facilities is preferred.
